The Knicks re-signed shooting guard and last season’s Sixth Man of the Year, J.R. Smith, reports Newsday’s Al Iannazzone. Smith signed a four-year deal worth approximately $25 million; the fourth year is a player option.

The team’s executive vice president and general manager Glen Grumwald made a statement about the importance of re-signing Smith. From the Newsday report:

“Re-signing J.R. was one of our primary goals this offseason and we are thrilled to have him back… He made great strides this past season with his consistent play off the bench for us, and we look forward to his continued growth.”

Smith, 27, averaged 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds in 33.5 minutes per game last season, all career highs. He also became the first NBA player in more than 23 years to have three consecutive 30-point games off the bench and was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for that period (March 31).
