Recently retired forward Rasheed Wallace is set to be hired as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons, according to a report from the Detroit News.

Wallace played for the Pistons for six seasons, helping the team win two Eastern Conference championships and a NBA title in 2004. The team hired Maurice Cheeks as their head coach last month to replace Lawrence Frank.

Wallace spent last season with the New York Knicks after coming out of retirement, but his season ended early because of a stress fracture in his foot.

The team recently added forward Josh Smith, who agreed to a four-year, $56 million deal last week.

More from the Detroit News:

Since leaving Detroit he’s dabbled in semi-retirement and also come out to play for the Celtics and Knicks, spending this season in New York before a stress fracture ended his season.

He doesn’t have to file retirement papers with the league because he was on a one-year deal with the Knicks, thus he isn’t on an existing contract.

He’ll mainly work with the Pistons’ young bigs — Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond and second-round pick Tony Mitchell.

I can see Rasheed coaching now, "Both teams "should" play hard."  This guy, who was a terrific athlete, but essentially un-coachable, is going to coach?  Yikes!

Joe Dumars is desperate. Why he still has a job is a huge mystery.

I guess he can offer a master's class on innovative ways to get technical fouls...

@MaryElaineCorrea

Sheed just finished playing and would have more rapport with the young players, which is often what you would like in an assistant coach in today's game.

Great hire.  Sheed has a great basketball mind and is well respected for his knowledge.
