The Cleveland Cavaliers are emerging as prime contenders, along with the Dallas Mavericks, to sign free-agent center Andrew Bynum,’s Marc Stein reported Sunday.

The Cavaliers’ interest hinges on Bynum’s willingness to sign a one-year contract, according to the report. Cleveland wants to keep as much cap space available as possible heading into the summer of 2014, when LeBron James and a host of other superstars could become free agents. The Cavaliers have about $15 million in cap space to spend on free agents this offseason.

The Mavericks are the other major potential suitor for Bynum, after they lost out on the chase for free-agent center Dwight Howard to the Houston Rockets.

Bynum endured a disastrous season with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2012-13, during which he failed to log a single minute on the court while dealing with knee issues. Bynum underwent arthroscopic surgery on both knees in March

Bynum has spent the rest of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. During the 2011-12 season, his best with the team, he started 60 games and averaged 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds while shooting nearly 56 percent from the field.

JENKINS: Through the turmoil, Dwight Howard is seeing clearly

Cavs won't get him.

They prefer players they don't really need. If they really wanted to contend, they wouldn't try and get

Bynum for only 1 year. What good does that do?

I remember a Dallas Mavericks team that had just won a championship and had a team assembled to win more. And they had a center named Tyson Chandler that played a huge role in their winning that ring. Chandler said he wanted to stay in Dallas and would not even ask for max money. And the enlightened owner said no, the Mavs no longer wanted him because they were going to sign all kinds of great free agents. Wow! And now that owner is trying to get Andrew Bynum. What a joke!

It makes sense to me. Andrew Bynum did have his best season under coach Mike Brown.

If you are going to sign a 1 year contact sign with Miami. You won't get the money but if you have a killer year you will demand a max deal after winning a championship.
