Legendary Lakers coach Phil Jackson poked fun at Dwight Howard’s decision on Twitter. (Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)

Legendary Lakers coach Phil Jackson offered his take on Dwight Howard bolting Los Angeles for the Houston Rockets with a pair of tweets on Sunday.

Jackson, who Howard reportedly asked the Lakers to hire early in the 2012-13 season, said the center “left a distaste in Lakerland” with his departure after just one disappointing season.

He also poked fun at Howard’s choice of Houston as his free-agent destination, writing that he is “better of [sic] an Astro.” The Houston Astros have been MLB’s worst team over the past two years, going 55-107 last season and 32-56 thus far in 2013.

Jackson had previously tweeted at Howard to encourage him to sign with the Lakers, writing that he expected to see him “get on board.”

THOMSEN: Rockets better with Howard, but still have a long way to go

ROSENBERG: With move to Houston, all pressure squarely on Dwight Howard

JENKINS: Through all the turmoil, Dwight Howard is now seeing clearly

he really thought it was the Astros who signed Howard. he is smoking so much weed in his  Montana ranch that he lost most of his  brain memory cells

Good for you Howard!! for leaving that dysfunctional Lakers organization. which has a knack for throwing their players under the bus.

Lakers problems began when Andrew took his jersey off while being ejected on the last game Phil coached. Then instead of going after a star quality center , they went to sleep and had a Dwightmare.

howard's best days are already behind him.  he will likely never win a title and probably won't be considered great when all is said and done.

The Lakers and Phil are just stunned and now hitting back at DH with any comment that is befitting to a team and a coach with absolutely no class or style.Phil's mom came from a long like of Mennonites ( they wear long dress and have hair down to their ankles) and his father was a minister in the Assemblies of God. Phil Jackson who grew up in a remote area of Montana in an austere environment. where no dancing or television was allowed. Did not see his first movie until he was a senior in high school and went to his first dance in college. He claims to be a "Zen Master" and practices "Native American Spiritualism", his austere upbringing and his "Zen and Native American Spiritualism" have not taught him about being "humble" or look past materialism and arrogance. Until he does, he will continue to be just another shallow materialistic arrogant being who only cares about himself, his pride and his obsession with power and money.

Remember when Aaron Gray dominated Howard a couple years ago?  Howard is overrated as it gets.

Did Howard leave a distaste or a bad taste? I know something can be distasteful but...........

Without Phil as the coach there was no way DH was going to put up the the massive ego of Kobie.  Plus Kobie said earlier in the year he had 2 years left at a maximum, lately he's been talking about 4 to 5 years.

DH good luck to you and the Rockets.  I'm sure you'll be seeing the Clippers in the playoffs, not the Lakers.

This was all about not signing Phil on as coach, who could have dealt with all the personalities AND whose system can have two big men scorers.  That's where the season was lost.

Its remarkable how much you can get away with,if you are a talented player, even if you dont have a brain.

Howard left a distaste? - wait til fans get a load of how bad the Lakers will be this year - 40+ losses and having to listen to kobe whine

I respect Phil Jackson's opinion, but he's essential an outsider and bias to a certain extend due to his tie's with the Los Angeles Lakers.  I honestly think Dwight Howard, knows what he needs to accomplish in Houston and that's simply to win, and win fast.  With the tutlege of NBA Greats Kevin McKale and Hakeem Olajuwon he's sure to accomplish all his NBA goals to include winning a NBA title within the next three to five years.

true laker fans were relieved when d12 didn't sign. All those championship banners are hanging because of men who always left it on the floor. The league has not seen that from Howard to this point. His one shot at a title was taken from those same real men then he gets here and cant handle the pressure LMAO. We stay great for a reason and he needed to go. Players these days have no loyalty and that's the problem with sports today. You can knock Kobe all you want at the end of the day hes one of the few greats left. Lakers for life win or loose, true fans stand up! Weak MEN look for an easier opportunity then taking on the challenge nuff said.

Phil is a nasty piece of work, not sure I ever saw a more unpleasant guest on the Tonight Show...he even managed to turn that into something ugly, though Adam Sandler, who I generally like, gave it  a head start.

Other organizations than the Lakers exist and can win,and why the bleep would Howard want to stay around people like Phil, Kobe, Shaq, or whatever Laker in body, current job, or spirit when they trash him publicly. Good riddance I say, the Laker folk are like spoiled children.

Phil Jackson, like all Laker fans would be dancing in the streets if Dwight Howard had signed with LA.  Who would want to go to LA and be Kobie's lackey.

A distaste for ..? Can you finish a sentence with "..left a distaste in Lakerland"? I know he means "bad taste". I'm not a grammar police, but Phil shouldn't keep using big words which don't mean what he thinks they mean.

Sour grapes from senile Jackson. He doesn't know the difference between MLB and NBA teams.

It's really hard not to get peeved by the way Howard has carried himself. Here's a guy who had asked for his coach SVG to be fired then hugs him pretending everything was fine. In LA, he couldn't stand Kobe's leadership; but when Kobe went down injured for the season, Howard couldn't even get the Lakers to put up a decent fight. He wants to be the team top dog, yet he asked Houston to add another superstar. The guy doesn't know what he wants. Worse, the guy's got no integrity, no class. And no amount of free-agency money can buy him that.

why do players get bashed when they make the choices they do as a free agent? I mean teams are never loyal to players and the minute you no longer can perform at top level they get rid of you. When a great player leaves a franchise these days they constantly get bashed.

It's like the players should be slave property to the greedy owners, but the owners don't have to be loyal to the players.

Makes no sense.

Shaq, Kobe and Phil are so mature and classy. And each of them is living in the past, way in the past. I am no Howard fan, but the more these guys speak, the more I dislike Howard less.

phil wouldn't even get in the playoffs if he didn't have HOF players on his teams. Great coach? LOL Not so much. pretty AVERAGE and bitter.

Correction, Phil's mom came from a long line of Mennonites.

@mbiggsat

meh

After LA was swept by the Mavs, I saw Phil Jackson as overrated.

He could definitely not handle Bynum. let Kobe have free reign (and thus Kobe imploded Pau's fragile confidence) and seemed confused (early Alzheimers?) in late game situations..

Not only does he need 'superteams', he also needs them to be in their prime

@Music is life rubbish.

The Lakers were buried when Jim Buss died.

His idiot son is running the show (into the ground)  while his genius daughter Jeannie and his son-in-law Phil Jackson watch and say the right things from the sidelines and watch the team implode under new (mis)Management.

@MarcNichol I don't think it's that big of a deal what  that Phil said, It's fact that most Lakers fans would be upset that Howard left. There a big chance that he would play better with Houston, then he ever did with the Lakers. Phil could had left off the Astro joke for it was not funny

Lakers has never been a team I would follow much, but all NBA fans has shown that they are loyal to their favorite team. In my opinion all fans can acted liked spoiled children at times when it come to their team

@Bumpa Wrong. You wouldn't know since you know no one from LA. The majority of Lakers fans didn't want him to sign since last season!

@Darnell there's a difference between a free agent signing to a new team and and one making it a giant distraction/media event/problem for the rest of his team/players/coaches. Howard is a drama queen and not only screwed Van Gundy/Orlando during his last two years there, he drags his drama to LA, doesn't play worth a damn/whines/complains and now heads off to Houston to do the same thing. If you can't see why that annoys people, then you might be lost.

@6marK6 how is anything Jackson said a slight or a negative/living in the past? He says Dwight is great on D, he says he didn't play well because of injury last year and wishes him well in Houston.

@morphy lmao, dumbest thing I've read all day. the majority of championship winning coaches all had HOF players on their teams...was he supposed to ask for them to be traded for bad players so that "morphy" would think he was a better coach 20+ years later? what a moron.

Why did Kobe beg Howard too re-sign and why did Jackson tweet to Howard to re-sign and why did the Lakers piss away all that money on bill boards to get him if they did not want him.  You don't know what you are talking about..  I am from LA.  The fact is Kobe is not well  received as a teammate.
