Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson had planned on resting outfielder Bryce Harper this weekend. According to Nationals’ beat reporter Mark Zuckerman, Harper wasn’t too keen on the idea of riding the bench this weekend.

Harper jokingly told Johnson “play me or trade me” in a text message in an attempt to dissuade Johnson from benching the 20-year-old. Harper had missed over a month with knee bursitis before returning to the lineup on Monday.

“Since trading him is out of the question, I guess I’m going to play him,” Johnson said in response to Harper’s demand.

Harper is just 1-for-19 since returning on Monday with the one hit being a home run on the second pitch he saw since his return from the disabled list. Despite struggling mightily at the plate, Harper is indeed in the lineup this weekend against the Padres.

So this is the state of sports journalism...a "story" based on a text message? When was the last time this "writer" actually interviewed anyone and then built a worthy story based on first hand account of a dog dying, or bad traffic on the way to the ballpark, or maybe...just maybe, a severe hangnail that prevented a 20 mil a year player from starting an important game...now THAT would be worth some of our reading time...but this dreck? Please...hire folks with some skills and then pay them enough to research and write some serious material, will ya!?

"Harper is just 1-for-19 since returning on Monday with the one hit being a home run"

sounds like the perfect (and typical) player for Davey Johnson.

How do they all know he was joking?

Harper and Trout will hit free agency relatively young, much younger than those on the wrong side of 30.  Of course they still have to produce between now and then but I'd much rather give a 25 to 27 yr old a huge 8 yr contract that to give an 8 to 10 yr contract to one who is already 31 or 32 yrs old.

That would have restocked the Nat's farm system quite nicely.  I would have been tempted to take the offer and discuss possible trades with other organizations.  Of course, the other 29 GM's would fall off their chairs if they were to pick up the phone/check their e-mail, etc and find that they were offered a player of that caliber.

@hellboy53 My god, some of you take this stuff far too seriously.  We are no longer living in the days of everyone getting their news from a daily paper or a weekly magazine.   This is now a volume business and light stories are going to get published.   Seems like can continue to be angst-ridden and miserable about it or accept the new paradigm.

@Reva P never gonna happen.

Bryce plays out his arbitration years and then enters FA at 25 unless a truly monstrous extension is thrown his way.

Scott Boras is his agent. No more need be said.

@JoeCabot @hellboy53 Sorry, my lemming suit is at the dry-cleaners JoeBoy...seems you're as "angst-ridden" about my comment as all the "miserable" folks you clearly believe should just get on the gravy train with the likes of you...sorry to disappoint and still hope for real journalism. I'm sure if we all just shut up about our standards that the status quo will take care of itself just fine..."My god..." in deed!

@JoeCabot @hellboy53 Gee, you have such a hard time with disagreement, I wish I could help out...but, well, I have better things to do. Enjoy your need to generalize about folks based on one comment that triggers SO much of your own inner whiner!! I'd toss you in with a bunch of other "guys" who are intolerant of folks like me who have the nerve to stand up for something...but my skills for such childishness pale in comparison to yours...So, I wish you all the best...enjoy your gravy!

@hellboy53 I see that you made your decision.  Enjoy your time as a chronic complainer.   You guys and your constant rants about  "real journalism", like there has always been some gold standard of what is eligible for print and what is not are amusing.   Oh, and I had you pegged for being the owner of a lemming suit.  Don't know why but I did.
