The Oakland Raiders will pay former quarterback JaMarcus Russell close to $3 million in a settlement over his disputed rookie contract, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Russell, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2007, signed a 6-year, $68 million contract, and was waived in May 2010 after three unproductive seasons. The team already owes $49.6 million in dead money this season to players no longer on the roster.

Russell was paid $36.4 million over that time period and was still owed $3 million at the time of his release.

The team filed a grievance against Russell, seeking repayment of $9.55 million in salary advances.  Russell also filed a grievance saying he was owed an additional $9 million.

Russell had a 7-18 record as a starting quarterback, completing 52.1 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 15 lost fumbles and a passer rating of 65.2.

In the past couple of months, Russell has reportedly lost 50 pounds trying to make a comeback in the NFL.

Am I the only person a little shocked to see his stats.. I know he was a bust.  I know I wouldn't want him on my team, but as a bears fan that witnessed Craig Krentzel and Jonathan Quinn start games, I mean 7-18 and a qb rating of 62 isnt near as awful as I assumed he would have been.  Is it even possible that I have been underrating Jamarcus Russell?

I have no love for this kid and think he was the most overpaid bust in history.  But it will be interesting to see if the scum that own and have owned the Raiders will pay up.  What a bunch of losers.  Why don't we ask Shanny how much they owe him now with interest?  They make poor choices as owners, then when it doesn't work out, they try and renege on the deal???  Come on...

@Sportsfan_Adam His stats aren't the issue so much as his lack of a work ethic or commitment to learning the team's offense. The irony is that he vehemently complained when NFL scouts criticized his work ethic as a college QB. In hindsight, the scouts were absolutely right! The only reason the Raiders were impressed is that he was a "workout wonder" demonstrating phenomenal arm strength in his pro day at LSU. Since Al Davis longed for the days of the Raiders scoring on long passes, that's all he needed to see to decide JaMarcus was his franchise QB. Colossal mistake!
