Early reports suggested that San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was arrested Sunday evening outside a San Diego nightclub following a bar fight, but the police have since disputed that report.

U-T San Diego is reporting that Mathews was not arrested, quoting Sgt. Robin Rose of the San Diego Police Department who says, despite the Examiner’s report, that Mathews was not taken into custody Sunday evening.

“We can say that he was definitely not arrested by SDPD,” Rose said, “but there might have been a separate arrest that lead to that [report]. … It was not Ryan Mathews.”

The Examiner and Big Lead Sports first reported news of the arrest.

From The Examiner:

One witness, David Nieto aka Dj Wired, reported seeing a group of five Hispanic males inside the club proceed to speak to Mathews and another black male. All men including Mathews were described as intoxicated. The altercation took place outside the club gate where everyone smokes. Witnesses say words over a female were exchanged and Mathews reportedly knocked one male out cold and the individual was taken to UCSD medical hospital.

My concern is not so much whether Ryan Matthews was arrested or not, but that he could of been intoxicated and in a position to get in trouble.I ask you, does this kind of activity something that someone wanting to do the best he can in his N.F.L. career, and do all that person can to play and possibly take the Chargers to a Superbowl/Would someone like Patton Manning put himself in this position?

I hope someone in that club was not "dissing" Matthews. If so, he needs to call some of his posse to come help him deal with that.

This is a story about something that did not happen.  "Journalism" doesn't get any worse than this.

The entire idea of this is outrageous. The very thought that an NFL player might get arrested...

Apparently somebody grazed him inside the bar and he fumbled his drinks immediately.

David Nieto aka Dj Wired, can you say you are being sued for defamation? That one you can say with a fact is going to be attributed to Ryan Mathews...

The police have already said he wasn't arrested. So why do you still run a rumor that turned out to be a lie in the headline???

you're an NFL athlete against some other random drunk dude?  of course the guy is gonna get blasted.  why don't these guys just walk away from situations like this?  NFL teams are counting the days to get their guys into training camp.

@DougYarbrough Two questions. 1. Who is Patton Manning?   What is that jumbled mess that starts after the word trouble?  Thanks.

@Los Pelotas Grandes  Michael's story is a good one, additionally a second witness came out in the UT saying he seen him cuffed and let go. If  Kim Kardashian was seen cuffed would reports by eye-witnesses say she was arrested, what does the average American call it? Detained, arrested, hand-cuffed? Additionally Michael is the most common name to spell and you got that wrong yet you dis a journalist...Michael's story is legit. 2 witness's saying the same thing, hmm?

@MARK7 Another witness stepped fourth in the UT stating he seen him cuffed, story is credible.
