Angels left-hander Jason Vargas out at least three weeks to remove blood clot
Angels starter Jason Vargas will undergo surgery to remove a blood clot this week, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times. Vargas was placed on the 15-day disabled list last week and will miss three to four weeks.
Vargas is 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 14 starts so far this season. He was named the American League’s pitcher of the month in May. Right-hander Billy Buckner replaced Vargas on the roster. The team has used 10 different starting pitchers so far this season.
Vargas was drafted by the Marlins in the 2nd round of the 2004 amateur draft. The 30-year-old spent time with the Marlins, Mets and Mariners. He was traded from the Mariners to the Angels for Kendrys Morales during the offseason.
