Report: Celtics’ Doc Rivers tried to fight Rajon Rondo in locker room

Celtics coach Doc Rivers reportedly tried to fight point guard Rajon Rondo after Rondo cursed at him during a meeting. (Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

Doc Rivers’s “intense dislike” for Rajon Rondo is the primary reason the coach wants to leave the Boston Celtics, according to Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com.

The feud between Rivers and his point guard led to an incident during a team meeting in the locker room in which Rondo cursed at Rivers, who responded by trying to fight Rondo before the “fracas” was broken up, a source close to the team told Sheridan.

The report does not specify when the fight occurred.

Reports on Friday said Rivers is no longer pursuing the Los Angeles Clippers’ head coaching position after the teams discussed a trade. The Celtics will resolve the situation on Monday, according to the same report.

Rivers and Rondo have clashed in the past. Their rocky relationship was the reason behind the Celtics putting Rondo on the trading block in each of the past two seasons.

And to think that SI's Michael Rosenberg said Ray Allen was foolish, if not dishonorable, to leave Boston for Miami

I'd take Doc in that one. I like to watch Rondo play. But the litany of players who don't like playing with him and one of the best coaches in the league wanting to get away from him makes me want him out of Boston.

I don't believe it.  But I heard an interview once where someone said the player they would never want to get into a fight with was Doc Rivers.

Don't listen to anonymous sourcing. They should have at least been able to tell you when this happened. What, we can't even get a year?

at this point they have to get rid of both of them. rondo because he is trouble in the locker room and they played so well when he went down last year. doc must go now that he let it be known he would rather coach elsewhere than be with the celtics next season. how is the team supposed to respect somebody who does not want to be there? it was a good run but time to move on and with players and a coach who want to be there.

Rondo can't make a free throw if his life depended on it.  Is that what they were arguing about?

The thugs are the reason I gave up on the NBA.  It is quite indicative of our society now.  No respect for authority.  A general selfishness in any and all aspects of life.  And an arrogance that desires attention all the time regardless of circumstances.  I weep for the future.

So if KG leaves the Celtics are going to get Rondo's best friend Josh Smith, right? Also, I really dislike the idea of losing Rivers.

It's getting harder and harder to defend Rondo.

Raja Rondo is a PUNK of the highest caliber.  He'll become the next Latrell Spreewell and fade into nothingness.  I'd love to have someone take his head off on the court the next chance they get.

You can't control your players, you can't coach.

Doc is overrated right/ Haha you are all fools if you think that.  The guy won a championship and look what he did last year.  The Celtics should have just folded after losing rondo, sullinger, barbosa, and aging garnett and pierce but they did not and they stayed 7th in the east.  Not to mention this was a team that almost knocked Miami out last year in the conference finals.  Before you make ludicrous comments actually watch some Celtics basketball games.

@hoosierdaddy5

This is a rumor that was floated about two years ago. Ridiculous that they're pulling it out of mothballs and trying again.

@Jeff S Ha! Maybe that's what Doc said in the meeting! Good one.

@riley8

You are right. The league started it's decent around the time of Dennis Rodman. Stern didn't help the situation. I miss the days of real men playing real basketball instead of these thugs with their phoney flops and b.s. tough guy personas. I don't believe the story about Rondo and Doc because I never accept stories with anonymous sources. Too much like tabloid reporting TMZ style. Give me sporting news. Not this cheap gossip.

@riley8 Oh please. All NBA players are thugs. Go watch the NFL: Steroid infused nut jobs, killing themselves, their wives etc.

@riley8 two men who have reached the top of their profession almost get into an altercation, neither have ever been arrested nor have criminal backgrounds and both are college educated (one is a college graduate). someone tell me where "the thugs" are? oh wait...it must be because both of the men are...millionaires? because it can't be because they're black. that would be...racist??? and we know we're in a post-racial society, just ask paula deen.

@riley8 And what moral standard have you lived by in RIGHTEOUS America? You condemn the thugs, with no clue on how many of these fellow citizens have been treated by good Americans! Your society created an environment that belittled anyone that did not look like them, have their faith tradition, or speak their language, force them to acquiesce to your world-view (and you still cannot stand them), and then say to BE LIKE US! H to the NO! Get off your self-righteous high horse and do something for humanity. Didn't Jesus say take the speck out of your eye so your can see the beam in your neighbors? It's amazing people have so much sight as it relates to the sins of others as if their sin don't stink! If you had any concern for the future you would be doing something to bless humanity since you have some sort of morality that others do not have.

@riley8 But lemme guess you like hockey. A sport that ALLOWS players to fight. I wonder what word, instead of thug, you really want to use? We agree on one thing. We both weep for the future.

@riley8 This is the kind of crap people you get when the inmates run the asylum.  David Stern is largely responsible for the trash that issues forth from this prison league when he puts the players first.  It is finally going to get better after Stern retires because it can't get any worse.

@RickDesper Well, we'll know for sure if he gets back to his full athleticism after recovering from the ACL injury. FTs are still crap, but his jumper was actually significantly improved last year.

Oh, wait... n/m.

@6marK6 It's really not that easy all the time.

These players are adults, and they are well-paid.  NBA coaches have very little leverage with which to "control" anybody.

@b4llinbyn4tur3 I would ask, with all the talent that Boston team he had had, how in the world did he only get one ring? That team was loaded.

Incidentally, every country is like that. You're just too blinded by left-wing propaganda to realize it.

@atthebarbershop @riley8 So stupid. David Stern largely cleaned up the league. Dress code for the bench, travel. Other personal conduct rules. Go watch hockey, with the world's stupidest white men.

@atthebarbershop @riley8  - fighting isn't necessarily equal to thug.  I think what the above commenter was getting at was the attitude and individual players are greater than the team atmosphere of the nba. Hockey is not like that.  If you trash talk in hockey you better be able to back it up.  In the nba you have a bunch of fake tough guys.  I enjoy both sports, but don't like the attitude of nba players.

Exactly, b-shop. Few in the league actually act in a "thug" fashion. These two are just jealous and racist cowards.

@RickDesper @6marK6 It is what good coaches do. Pat Riley never had any problems because the players knew who was boss. If the player knows who is boss, he will do what he is told.

Injuries. Rondo went down in playoffs one year. Perkins got hurt in games 6 and 7 against the lakers. kg was hurt the year after their championship

atorres

@6marK6 @b4llinbyn4tur3 Their first three years together they were great, just caught some bad breaks. They won championship first year together, 2nd year they stared 27-2 but Garnett got hurt and did not play for the rest of the year. Almost beat that Orlando Magic team that went to Finals that year without Garnett, the next year they make it to Finals to lose a hard fought game 7 missing one of their emotional leaders, (perkins tore knee in game 6). I believe the following year Rondo dislocated his elbow against heat in playoffs and the next year Green was out because of a heart condition. They did not form the "big three" until later in each players career.

@6marK6 @b4llinbyn4tur3 They actually have to play other really, really good teams to win it all. Apparently they don't just give the trophy to 'loaded' teams anymore...

My ancestors were serfs  -- i.e., slaves -- in Eastern Europe, long after the Emancipation Proclamation.  Both sets of grandparents lost everything they owned, twice -- WWI and WWII, the second time to the Communists, whose murder camps -- the Gulag -- they barely escaped.  In grade school I was taunted constantly:  Commie, Little Russian.  In the military, I senior officers told me "people like you" shouldn't hold a security clearance because of my ancestry.

So, pal, І know firsthand what bigotry is.  My people, too have suffered.  The difference between us is that I don't let this garbage rule my life.  I love this country and am grateful to live here, where poor people (who have cars, fridges, cell phones, and even real property) live far, far better than the elites in most of the rest of the world.

You, too, are an American citizen.  Don't like America?  Resent how your ancestors were treated?  You're free to find someplace you like better.

Where do you see "thug" in my post?  Nowhere.  You have zero credibility, injecting hate-speech into the conversation, then blaming me for it.

Living in the USA is a privilege.  You don't like it here?  There's nothing keeping you here.  Find someplace you like better, and good luck to you.

You're "hitting me over the head" with Our Lord.  That makes you guilty of violating the Second Commandment.

@MidwestGolfFan @fothgt @riley8 If you COME to America? Many African-Americans wouldn't describe their transit here as being one of choice. That you put it like this, shows a heartbreaking lack of understanding of what it is to have your freedom  taken away for centuries, then forgotten by those who actually had a choice.

fothgt

@MidwestGolfFan @fothgt @riley8 Aint leavin America because I was born here! But stop calling people thugs. What thugs caused slavery in America? Or what thugs incorporated Jim Crow laws in American jurisprudence? Or hung people based on race? It seems the thugs who call other people thugs have a one sided view of America! Hence the reference to Jesus and His comments on "getting the speck out of your own eye." But most of those thugs will seem to never really understand Christ's teachings and definitely not His example!

@MidwestGolfFan @atthebarbershop @Mark20 @riley8 :"slovenly habits and their body art, look like convicts"- they are better trained than  most civilians so your slovenly comment makes you look stupid. Also the fact that you associate body art with convicts lets everyone know how close minded and stupid you are. Especially considering most people with tattoos have never been to prison.

MidwestGolfFan

@atthebarbershop @Mark20 @riley8

Most basketball players, with their slovenly habits and their body art, look like convicts. Regardless of race, creed, or national affiliation.  That's why I don't follow the NBA very much anymore.

atthebarbershop
atthebarbershop

@Mark20 @atthebarbershop @riley8 what does the dress code have to do with the things you said, "inmates running the asylum," "prison league?" Sounds like you are associating the people in the league with "prison" and not the dress code. In hockey, the players actaully commit battery on each other without league or legal sanction, and encouragement from the fans and probably the team. But you call NBA players thugs?! Wonder why that is?

atthebarbershop
atthebarbershop

@chitownboxing @atthebarbershop @riley8 I disagree.  Players talk trash all the time, but they can't fight because there are harsh rules against fighting, not because NBA players are fake tough guys. Plus, to be a thug, don't you have to also be a fighter. Maybe there is another word. I don't think thug is the right one. All it is code for something far worse.

Wow.  You've really got issues.

I guess you're not really up to discussing the reality of coaching players who earn over $10 million per year.  So you're going to make wild-assed personal attacks.

@HOFPufnstuf Kind of like how MJ replaced Doug Collins with Phil Jackson.  And how Kobe replaced whoever it was with Phil Jackson.  And how LeBron got rid of van Gundy in favor of Spoelstra.

The reality of the NBA is it's a lot easier to replace a coach than an elite player.  And the players know that.

Shall we talk  about why Pat Riley was forced out of the  Lakers job?  It wasn't because the players "knew who was boss."
