When it comes to the New York Jets quarterback competition, center Nick Mangold thinks that Mark Sanchez should emerge as the Week 1 starter.

Even though the team drafted Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Mangold says that the rest of the team wants Sanchez to be the starter as well.

Sanchez ended last season on shaky ground, even being benched in December. He committed 26 turnovers in 15 games in 2012 and has a career completion rate of 55.1 percent. The team has missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

“I believe so,” Mangold said to the New York Post when asked if the rest of the locker room hopes Sanchez wins the job. “I haven’t walked around with a pen and paper and taken a poll, but from the feeling I get, the locker room wants to win. Whoever gives us the best chance to do that, we want out there — and at this point, Mark gives us that best chance.”

“I think Mark is a fantastic quarterback for us, and I think he can do some good things,” Mangold said. “He showed some good flashes in the spring, getting [new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg’s] system down and commanding the offense way that he should be. We’ll see how training camp plays out, but either way, the competition will make him a better player.”

Poor Mangold seems to have suffered many concussions if he thinks the Sanchize is the way to go.

"whoever gives us the best chance to win" isn't this the same line FatBoy used all last season to keep Idiot Sanchise in the game??

"Whoever gives us the best chance to do that, we want out there — and at this point, Mark gives us that best chance.”

I don't see this as a ringing endorsement, just a statement of fact.  "Right now" Mark probably is looking better and more comfortable in the position.  In 3 months that could change and Mangold will come back and remind you of exactly what he said.

WHY?  Are they trying to get rid of coach Ryan?

If the hair band male model gives the Jets the best chance of winning there is a problem.

"Mangold says that the rest of the team wants Sanchez to be the starter"

Funny enough, so do the fan bases of 31 other nfl teams.

Here we go,Another nit wit to speak up for Sanchez. Now they need to boost his confidence by making dumb comments that we all know they have no choice to make or their QB is gonna cry...

Why don't they all just learn the phrase "no comment".  The yapping starts with the coach and it trickles down, and it does no good.

The poor man has lost his marbles. He actually believes the butt-fumbler is a good QB.

See what happens when you face the pressure of playing and succeeding in NFL day in and day out?

“I think Mark is a fantastic quarterback for us, and I think he can do some good things,” Mangold said.  This is why most pro football players are absolute idiots with sub intelligence. Please tell me what exactly Sanchez did "fantastically" for the Jets the past 2 seasons. Not that I like Geno SMith either. Sounds like another bum who'll be bankrupt when his NFL career ends in 5 years!

What else would one expect Mangold to say?  "I want a totally untested rookie to start over this 4-year veteran  because the vet QB absolutely blows"?

@mgranadosv The choice at this point is Sanchez, or Smith. If you think Smith is or ever will be the answer, then perhaps you have suffered to many concussions yourself. Right now, I agree with Mangold....

@Jean  I see you really like Mark. I wonder what choice you would make, given the current staff. IMO, Smith isn't the answer....

@David G What he is actually saying is "we have absolutely no chance of winning"...

@luvfoozball  I think it would be nice if you could read....He said that Sanchez offered the best chance to win. Meaning that Smith or no one else on the roster is even close to ready. He did NOT say Sanchez was good, bad or indifferent...I'm no fan of Sanchez, but considering the choices, IMO Mangold is right.

@larrybradford @Jean Sanchez is a proven loser.  He finished last in the NFL in various player efficiency ratings last year.  Why throw away another season on him?  If I were starting an NFL team right now and had my choice of Sanchez or Smith, I would take Smith.  Smith is no sure fire NFL star, he might be a washout. But I know what I would be getting with Sanchez and it is very ugly.
