Three Navy football players will be charged with rape after officials completed their investigation of a female midshipman’s report she was sexually assaulted by the three players last year, reports Military.com.

The alleged assault occurred in April 2012 at an off-campus house in Annapolis. According to the female’s lawyer, the woman woke up with bruises after drinking heavily one night and learned from friends and social media later that three football players — whom she considered friends — were claiming to have had sex with her while she was intoxicated and blacked out.

All three players remain at the Naval Academy including a senior who was kept from graduating May 24 with the rest of his class. And all three were allowed to play football during the 2012 season.

More from Military.com:

The three players have not been named by the Naval Academy as the Navy has yet to complete the official charge sheet. However, the Naval Academy issued a statement Monday confirming that Superintendent Michael Miller has chosen to send the case to Article 32 proceedings.

Naval Academy spokesman Cmdr. John Schofield confirmed that all three football players will face an Article 32 hearing, which requires charges be issued against all three.

I guess all men should carry a breathalyzer with them to parties... maybe call it foreplay... so they don't get charged in cases like these.  Not defending rape or abusing women, just understanding that I have been around intoxicated women who were very flirtatious and the next day they didn't have a clue.  The postings of others is what made the woman upset, and the fact is that she didn't report it as a rape, someone else heard the story and reported it.

@Cool A woman that can't say 'Yes' is saying 'no'. Go by that rule.

@Rickapolis I agree completely with what you said. My point is pretty simple.. this women may have very well said yes.. and by her own admission she doesn't know if she did or not.  If I have been drinking, and a woman has been drinking, there are two parties with limited thought process abilities.. If one drunk says yes to the other drunk, then you can't expect only one drunk to be held accountable for the actions.

@Cool

Not only didn't she report it as a rape, when an investigation was started she refused to cooperate with the NCIS for many months.

Stating the obvious here: sexual assault is a crime.  Only slightly less bad? A female midshipmen getting intoxicated and blacking out in a party.  Perhaps, wisdom at the naval academy is as stunning as the effectiveness of their wishbone offense?

Are you kidding? Showing a picture of cheers under the heading of players charged with rape..not to appropriate.

Hang them from a yardarm

Unfortunately, sex-crime against service-women in our armed forces has been utterly rampant in the last decade.  It's actually really and truly a huge issue, and one that's not been appropriately reported in the media (not to the high-profile extent it warrants).

I realize these guys are innocent until proven guilty, but suffice it to say that this headline doesn't surprise me in the least, considering what else I know. Maybe now the issue will start getting proper coverage in the media.

I love how people are already convicting these guys when a trial hasn't even taken place.  They deserve their time in court like anyone else.  If there is solid evidence, convict them.  That's how it works, not matter what the crime.  People seem to forget that.

Can't assume they are guilty.  Remember the Duke lacrosse players...  If they are guilty though, send em away a long time.

@Yanks2009 Those charges were brought by a prostitute running a con, this is a female cadet at Annapolis.

They HAVE to put an end to sexual 'misconduct', an euphemism for rape. Tried, and if guilty sent to prison. Military or civilian, I don't care. We have to show that is intolerable, and unacceptable behavior.  A nation that allows half it's citizens to be attacked with virtual impunity is a very poor nation indeed.

is that picture maybe a little offside?

@jack34 I had the same gut reaction as we can only see 1, maybe 2 female cadets in a sea of men...unintentional or purposefully controversial?

All three were allowed to play football last season? Looking forward to the Academy explaining that decision.

@iclasticons

That's easy to explain.  For months the alleged victim refused to cooperate with NCIS in the investigation, so they shut it down.  Not until the past two months has she changed her tune and decided to cooperate.

That refusal to cooperate will not be a point in her favor at the trial.  I assume the defense will be that the sex was consensual, and her refusal to cooperate in the investigation will be viewed as consistent with that.

@iclasticons - When were the allegations made?  The article was misleading stating the incident occurred in April but they were allowed to play footaball that same year.

@iclasticons You don't know the half of it.  The armed forces have a terrible track record in regard to investigating and punishing sex-crime amongst their ranks.

@leehwgoc @iclasticons Lets also point out that American Justice is based on innocent until proven guilty. I see you automatically found them guilty.

Your ignorance of the case is showing and given how little the article actually says, one would think you would go find out before making a fool of yourself an posting on something you know zero about.

The investigation was shut down for  months while the alleged victim repeatedly refused to cooperate with NCIS.  Simply put, no testimony from her that it was rape and not consensual, no case.  Not until the past two months has she changed her tune and decided to cooperate.
