A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin said Sunday that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s version of a story in which his Super Bowl XXXIX ring ended up in Putin’s hands is “weird.”

Last week, Kraft told a crowd at Carnegie Hall that Putin stole Kraft’s Super Bowl ring during a 2005 meeting, according to the New York Post.

“I took out the ring and showed it to [Putin], and he put it on and he goes, ‘I can kill someone with this ring,’ ” Kraft told the crowd at Carnegie Hall’s Medal of Excellence gala at the Waldorf-Astoria, according to the Post.“I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out.”

The Post reported that when Kraft wanted the ring back, the White House intervened and said it would be in the best interest of U.S.-Russian relations to frame the ring as a gift. Kraft said he played along with the White House’s wishes.

But Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that version of the story is “weird” and not true. Peskov told CNN that Kraft gave Putin the ring as a gift.

“What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird,” Peskov said. “I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift.”

Peskov told CNN that the 4.94-carat ring now is located at the Kremlin’s library. A spokesman for The Kraft Group released a statement on Sunday saying that Kraft often tells the story as a humorous anecdote.

“He loves that the ring is at the Kremlin and, as he stated back in 2005, he continues to have great respect for Russia and the leadership of President Putin,” the spokesman, Stacey James, told CNN.

Misinterpretation....I don't think he was giving Putin the ring as a gift, hah hah.

it's weird that this Peskov was standing 8 inches away. You're in my bubble, dude ...

story is weird to all Russians, only because majority don't care / know what the Super Bowl is to begin with. Putin especially, I mean does someone really think he's not a president, but some sports fan? All the media is a show, behind "self marketing" he's actually a real president that lives up to the meaning of the word?

As far as stealing a ring.. hmm .. he should next time - apparently people would belivee

When Kraft mentioned Putin's KGB bodyguards, I knew he was making up a fanciful story. Kraft is a gazillionaire and I'm sure he stays on top of current events. At the very least, he should know the KGB was dissolved in 1991 when the old Soviet Union fell apart.. The KGB was replaced by the FSB - the Federal Security Service. Putin is guarded by the FSO - the Federal Protective Service. They're separate from the FSB and have custody of the Russian "nuclear football". The FSO is a direct descendant of the old KGB Ninth Chief Directorate. If I were Putin, I'd return Kraft's ring. Putin doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would accept a ring from another man, not that there's anything wrong with that...

Typical Media slanting the story to cause negative feelings and controversy.

likely kraft handed him the ring instead of just showing it to him and this was taken as a gesture of gift giving

C'mon, who are we going to believe? A dirty Russky surrounded by his KGB thugs, or the owner of the New England PATRIOTS? Maybe we should launch a commando raid on the Kremlin and get it back.

I am not buying Kraft's story.

I wonder if Vladimir knows the ring is from a tainted win by Billy Belicheat's video cameras?

LOL, this just in. According to PTI, he (Kraft) ...."Got gangsta'd" by Putin, and that's a good thing when a NFL owner get's made to look like a fool."  -Michael Wilbon

@leon1376 if im just some american, even a smart business man like Kraft, why should i know in depth, details of the comings and goings of the Russian security forces. Quite frankly every tourist that goes to Russia could be given your comment on a card and i bet 95% of them would refer to the security forces as the KGB. it Hardly proves his ring wasnt taken.

and secondly, think about the item taken. why would he give something that personal to putin? there are a million different Gaudy rings he could have selected and given him, instead he showed up with his custom fit super bowl ring, and than let without it, it just seems very unlikely he ment it as a gift.

@leon1376

So he got the letters wrong, big deal. Sounds like a believable story to me. The way they conduct business, law enforcement, and just about anything else is quite different than what we think is propriety. So Putin says it's weird. Every Russian person I've ever met is 'weird'. Try visiting the country or actually talking to someone who's lived there or done business there regularly and see if you still think it's 'fanciful'...

You should enlighten us as to where to get real, objectively reported stories, would you please? I guess you just come on here for kicks then?

Oh and furthermore it was not just the pats, however the other teams were just so jealous of perfection (yeah) that they had to find something. 2005 was like what? 8 years ago, don't you think something would have been done by now (yankees still suck :))

@DavidChristian He likely does not know that.  However he probably does know that the Patriots won the game, the win is legitimate, the record books contain no asterisk, and that the story of the win being tainted is  only  being perpetuated by a few cyber-screamers that don't realize that it is 2013.

@Ryan16 @leon1376 Because Kraft and I come from a generation where we were constantly being told that the USSR was going to nuke us into a sea of obsidian. We read newspapers. We watched the news. We paid attention to what was going on in the world. When the Soviet Union collapsed, everyone massively exhaled. This was a huge event. The Wall came down. The KGB folded. You don't forget things like that. What do tourists know about the KGB? Little to nothing. That was over twenty years ago. Only old guys like me remember the KGB.

Kraft was being deliberately insulting when he mentioned the KGB. That's like meeting Angela Merkel and talking about her "Gestapo bodyguards". Same thing. Kraft is a smart guy. He knows better. As far as the Super Bowl rings go, the manufacturer always casts a few extras before the mold is broken. In fact, Kraft undoubtedly received several. It's common practice for owners to give away Super Bowl rings as gifts. Putin is probably not the only person to whom Kraft gave a ring. Kraft is close buds with Elton John and Rush Limbaugh. Maybe they each got one as well.

@Joebuckster @leon1376 I first visited Russia when it was the Soviet Union, during the height of the Cold War, and returned several times thereafter. Without exception, I've found Russians to be warm and welcoming. Russians are probably the most "soulful" people on the planet. To brand Russians as "weird" tells me you're the typical "ugly American". I'm constantly apologizing for people like you. In the last fifty years I've been all over the world and I've never found any race of people to be "weird". I come down on the side of Putin on this one. Why? For a number of reasons but most of all, Putin is ex-KGB. Trust me when I tell you that back in the day, a KGB officer was flat  incorruptible. To lie, steal, or take a bribe was regarded as a crime against the state and the fastest way to get a bullet in the back of the neck. Kraft showed himself to be utterly classless by accusing Putin of being a common thief. You have to remember that Kraft and Rush Limbaugh are BFFs and Rush let's his mouth get him in trouble all the time as well.

@Joebuckster Big assumption you are making.  I have enjoyed seeing the Patriots lose their last couple of Super Bowl games.   My only point is that you cyber-screamers still ranting about the legitimacy of any Super Bowl win are doing nothing but smashing your thick heads against a brick wall.   The game and season are over, the trophy has been awarded, the record books have been updated, making everything legitimate.  Except in the eyes of a few special cases who cannot or will not accept reality.
