Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitcher A.J. Burnett has a Grade 1 tear in his right calf, according to Pittsburgh Tribune reporter Rob Biertempfel. Burnett injured his calf while running in the outfield as a part of his training regime in between starts. Burnett is in a walking boot and can’t put any weight on the injured right leg.

Burnett said he hopes the tear isn’t a “six-week thing” although there is no timetable yet for the veteran’s return.Burnett had his longest outing of the season on June 8 against the Cubs where he tossed 8 1/3 innings, relenting only two runs in his sixth win of the year for the Pirates.

In his 15th season, Burnett is sporting a 3.12 ERA over 89.1 innings with 99 strikeouts.
