Pirates to promote top pitching prospect Gerrit Cole for start on Tuesday
The Pittsburgh Pirates will call up top pitching prospect Gerrit Cole to start Tuesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, the team announced Saturday.
Cole, ranked as the No. 7 prospect in baseball according to Baseball America, has a 2.91 ERA, 47 strikeouts and 28 walks in 12 starts at Triple-A Indianapolis this season.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound right-hander was the Pirates’ first overall pick out of UCLA in the 2011 draft. He has a 2.84 ERA, 183 strikeouts, 73 walks and 157 hits allowed in 200 minor-league innings.

Cole, 22, boasts a fastball that can reach 100 mph, a change-up and slider. He will face Giants righty Tim Lincecum on Tuesday.
