Japan becomes first team to qualify for 2014 World Cup
With a 1-1 draw against Australia on Tuesday, Japan became the first team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, reports the Associated Press. There was no score until the 82nd minute when Tommy Oar gave Australia a 1-0 lead, but Keisuke Honda tied the game on a penalty kick in extra time.
Japan got the one point it needed to clinch its spot in the World Cup. They have 14 points in 7 matches in Asian qualifying Group B, meaning they will reach the finals as one of the top two.
Japan has qualified for the past four consecutive World Cups and also won the AFC Asian Cup a record four times.
