Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds already wants an expansion on the four-team playoff set to begin in the 2014 season. Dodds said on Thursday that college football ultimately needs at least an eight-team playoff, calling the four-team playoff a “good step” but a “baby step.”

Dodds said that an eight-team playoff would cut down on some of the controversy over which teams ultimately make the playoff.

“I think there’ll be a lot of conversation about the fifth team and who didn’t get in and an 11-1 team that didn’t get in because somebody’s 12-0 that maybe wasn’t quite as good as 11-1,” he told reporters at the Big 12′s annual spring meetings, according to ESPN.com. “If you take eight, you’re not going to have that. The ninth team is going to have a concern, but it’s not like the fifth team.”

Dodds, who started at Texas in 1981, has been a proponent of a college football playoff for quite some time.

He wants to go to 8 because he knows damn good and well it's the only way in the world his team has a chance of making it.  Especially since they don't have a conference championship game.  Honestly, I don't think Texas makes it in the top 4 out of the state of Texas.

Take it to 12.  4 main conference champs (require big 12 to play a championship game).  Then give them a week off and allow the other 8 play.   This will allow those 8 ( picked by commitee) to play conf champs.  This gives winning the Conference an advantage with a week off to do nothing but watch your competition. It also will keep from the possibility of the top 3 teams out of 4 being SEC.  If the championship teams want to watch numbers drop.  Just wait for where one conference is dominating the current tournament.

or heck do a 6 team playoff.  The top two ranked conference champions get a bye week and the other 4 have to play each other to play the top 2.  This way you get all 4 major conf champions and +2 that a panel can decide on.

Have to disagree guys. It needs to be at 4 or 8 games, I prefer 8. Keep it so that everyone involved has the same number of games. A lot can be gained from an extra week of preparation while your eventual opponent is playing (not to mention the increased risk of injury for the teams playing the extra games). I've been a huge proponent of 8 teams from the beginning. I also hate the conference champions idea. Give me the top 8 teams regardless of conference affiliation. I would like the SEC dominance to end more than anyone, but in the end, I want the best teams playing in the playoff and a committee should be able to decide on the top 8. Will there be controversy regarding 8 and 9 or even 10 some years, of course. But choosing 8 seems much easier than 4 and it gives us more good football games to watch. Not to mention the increased revenue generated, which sadly, will be the main reason the 4 team playoff eventually expands to 8.
