New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will undergo another surgery on his back in mid-June, likely sidelining him for a portion of training camp, according to Albert Breer of NFL.com.

The Patriots anticipated Gronkowski would require the surgery after their record-breaking tight end experienced chronic back pain.

Gronkowski has undergone four surgeries on his left forearm since mid-November after injuring it during the 2012 season, then reinjuring it during the playoffs. The infection involved with those surgeries has cleared up, according to a Breer tweet.

Gronkowski previously underwent a 3-1/2-hour microdiscectomy to remove a small portion of his spine and relieve pressure on his sciatic nerve while at the University of Arizona.

Not a shocker at all to anyone with a modicum of intelligence.  Back issues NEVER go away.  EVER - even if you're not playing one of the most violent sports on the planet.  The Patriots are getting what they paid for - a guy that didn't stay healthy in college (missed an entire season for a back injury/surgery) and can't stay healthy in the pros.

He should consider retiring.  If he's already experiencing such issues, retire now and have a chance at living a decent after career life.  What good is it to play another few years and be in constant pain the rest of your life?

The Ravens dodged a bullet by getting out maneuvered by the Patriots in the draft.

With his history of injuries not healing properly he might miss some of the 2013 season. This could be good news for Ballard.....but a healthy Gronk is most important for the success of the Pats offense. They better not rush him back in the line up too early.....4th game sounds about right.

wow its a shame. this dude when healthy is impossible to stop. this has to at some point cut his career short there's only so many times you can keep repairing bone etc.

@Scramble They took Sergio Kindle who got drunk and fell down a flight out stairs and never plays instead.  Heck of a bullet they dodged, there.

@salvaje50 @Scramble But they ended up with Pitta and a super bowl victory. Sometimes you cut your losses to get the big ring.
