Raiders coach Dennis Allen: Matt Flynn is ‘our starting quarterback’
“Matt’s our starting quarterback as we go forward right now,” Allen said, according to Corkran’s report, “and until the competition dictates otherwise, that’s where we’re going.”
Rookie Tyler Wilson and former Ohio State star Terrelle Pryor are also competing for the starting job.
Oakland traded veteran starter Carson Palmer to Arizona this offseason and acquired Flynn from the Seahawks.
Flynn became the Raiders’ presumptive starter, but he learned last season that distinction means little. Seattle had signed him to a three-year, $26 million contract in the offseason. Flynn had played well in limited action behind Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, and the Seahawks offered a chance to prove he was an NFL starter.
But rookie Russell Wilson won the quarterback competition during training camp and had a stellar first season. Flynn became expendable.
With the Raiders, he’ll again face a challenge to start. But at least for now, he’s still controls the position.
