Alabama backup quarterback Phillip Ely will transfer to Toledo, he announced Wednesday on Twitter.

Ely will have to sit out the upcoming season but will then have two years of eligibility left.

Al.com’s Don Kausler reports that Toledo recruited Ely coming out of high school. But the quarterback chose Alabama and was the Crimson Tide’s only signee at the position in 2011. He played in six games last season and attempted four passes.

But Kausler reports it was clear that Ely had fallen down the depth chart. Junior Blake Sims and redshirt freshman Alec Morris were fighting to back up senior A.J. McCarron.

Ely chose the Rockets over Ohio State, Illinois and Boston College, among other schools, his father told Kausler.

Great. Don't stay and compete, quit and go somewhere that will let you play. This guy won't amount to much. No balls

Classic  big fish/small pond to small fish/big pond syndrome ....He may do well at Toledo to where he should have went in the first place.

I wonder if he is 'transferring' or did Mr. Saban  pull his  scholarship?,   I vote his scholarship was pulled.

Phillip's a great young man.  He was born in Ohio, actually, before moving to Alabama, and from there to Tampa.. He also has football in his blood, with a father and brothers who played for U of Miami and Florida.  He'll be a good pick up by the Rockets.

Well, once there were nine, now there are eight.  Unfortunately for Ely, Morris's performance at the Spring Game knocked him down a peg on the depth chart.  I don't fault him for leaving to be a starter somewhere else and wish him the best.  Morris and Bateman are the future although McLeod and Del Rio shouldn't be counted out.  An embarrassment of riches can be a good thing.

Good for this young man. Again I ask why would you set the bench when you can play at some other university?

@ImmaFubared He was told by the coaching staff after the Spring Game that he'd never get a chance to compete for the starting spot. Why not transfer if he has an opportunity elsewhere?
