Rutgers athletic director Julie Hermann said during a conference call on Monday that she has no plans to resign and that she never abused players while a volleyball coach at the University of Tennessee.

Hermann was accused of abuse by former players and they aired their grievances against Hermann in a letter signed by the entire volleyball team.

Hermann said she never called players “whores” and she is unsure why her turmoil with the team in the 1990s is coming up now. She is due to start her job as AD next month.

“I don’t know what their motivation is 17 years later,” Hermann said, answering questions from four reporters in the 10-minute conference call, via the Newark Star-Ledger. “Am I an intense coach? I’m absolutely an intense coach as many coaches are. But there is a big canyon between being super-intense and abuse. And this was not an abusive environment for these women.”

Rutgers president Robert L. Barchi said in a statement that he supports Hermann.

“Looking at Julie’s entire record of accomplishment, which is stellar, we remain confident that we have selected an individual who will work in the best interests of all of our student athletes, our athletics teams and the university,” part of the statement read.

More from the Star-Ledger:

Hermann was hired by Rutgers to help rebuild its sports program after basketball coach Mike Rice was fired in April after video emerged of him hitting and shouting gay slurs at players at practices. Critics, including several state lawmakers, have questioned whether Hermann is the right person to lead Rutgers’ sports program considering her past.

“I never considered withdrawing because I feel very qualified to lead Rutgers into the future and into the transition of the Big Ten,” Hermann said. “And I do feel the support of the Rutgers community.”

I don't really care one way or the other about Rutgers, but I'd like to hear the whole story behind her supposed "abuse." I'd like to read a truly exhaustive investigation of these allegations from so long ago. Then maybe I can have an actual educated opinion.

She has a future in the Obama administration.

Wonder if this supposed AD at Rutgers this wild woman abuser failed coach has a husband and children to back her up???

This lady has lost all credibility and respect before she/he even takes the job at Rutgers. No way this amazon mean lady ever gets it going at Rutgers. Plus she is unqualified for the role as AD anyway. What is wrong with Rutgers??? Hire a man with New jersey sports credentials that understands Rutgers and the Big Ten.

As a professor at Rutgers, I can state that Ms. Hermann most definitely does NOT have "the support of the Rutgers community," as she claims to feel. I find it really disturbing that someone who hasn't even started working at Rutgers would have the arrogance to make such a statement. I can't speak for all members of "the Rutgers community," but the colleagues and students who I've been in touch with over the weekend are frankly terrified at the prospect that she might be given a position of authority over our already traumatized student-athletes.

If she resigns she likely gets nothing in compensation unless there is a clause in her contract which allows a resignation-buyout (doubtful). She knows she will be fired, will put up a stink, and Rutgers will pay out a million or thereabouts so she won't be left with nothing. It is just the Big Dance going on now.

Fire her now and have (her) one lawsuit rather than fire her later when all the other lawsuits start pouring in.

This lady has proven that she can't be trusted on her word alone.  When asked about the firing of an assistant coach for getting pregnant she denied it.  She went as far as to say she didn't even attend the assistants wedding, although there is video of her as one of the bridesmaids and a video of her telling the assistant she hoped she didn't get pregnant, and then catching the bouquet...  but she swears she wasn't there and that there is no video.

Guess Rice would still be bball coach if the video hadn't gone viral. Bet she is thankful they didn't have the same facility to record back then. It's beyond me that Rutgers would at this point would hire an AD that has even a hint of a suspicion of player abuse.

Get rid of this amazon unmarried no family abuser failed coach.  What the hell is wrong with Rutgers?? This crazy Lezie makes Mice Rice look like Mr. Rodgers.

The ENTIRE team claims she abused them. I'm sure every single person on that team has decided they want to perpetrate a lie in the interest of getting the first ever female AD of Rutgers fired for no reason. That sounds very plausible...

An administrator's "entire record of accomplishment" becomes moot when that record includes even few instances of well-documented abuse of athletes and fellow coaches and her denial of such behavior. This pattern of behavior and speech sounds sociopathic.

Typical of the Rutgers administration: a lame effort to defend their indefensible and highly unqualified selection.

@CheriEspinoza Cheri, somehow I doubt that the addition of more facts will allow you to have an "educated" opinion.

@muser ... In what sense? I didn't realize she had any such ambitions or experience. Do you mean in a particular department or post? Just wondering, it's an intriguing idea. She probably needs to fulfill this A.D. thing first, of course.

@RutgersProf That's Professor for you honest and clear statement. Rutgers deserves better than this disgusting abuser and failed coach.  What is wrong with Rutgers????

@RutgersProf I just couldn't let this go.  Talk about arrogance!  Where do you get off thinking that you represent the "Rutgers community"?  A few liberal educators who refuse to see the benefits that big time college athletics can bring a university do not and should not constitute any policy dealing with the athletic department.  Stick to what you know and leave the big decisions up to those who are qualified.

As to "traumatized student-athletes" at Rutgers...give me a break.  As a former student athlete myself, I've heard far worse from opposing players and fans than was ever done by any coach...including your basketball coach.  You don't get 'time outs' in the real world...you get your butt kicked.

@Cool Thank you! Is this woman in major denial or what? She is lying her a-- off about her past! If she admitted it and expressed remorse then I wouldn't care, but lying should be grounds for the university reneging on hiring her. Rutgers is very, very stupid for keeping her on. They are going to get a lot of heat for this.

@JimKirkwood1 oh come on it was 17 yrs ago. Im sorry but even if it did happen and there is no proof it did, it was 17 years ago and this woman has worked very hard with no , i repeat no accusations of abuse since, She deserves this chance. There are murderers and rapist who are given second chances after less then 5 yrs in jail why shouldn't this woman be given a second chance. This isn't like rice at all.

@joeshine730  "This crazy lezie..."? You've got to be kidding me. If that's the best you can do, you really need to get counseling.

@CheriEspinoza Cheri..her AD post will likely end soon., partly based on blatant lies like the one about how she didn't remember attending the wedding, as a bridesmaid, of a coach she later fired. This type of dishonesty would make her a fit in any department or post in the current administration, but you knew that.

joeshine730

@doublejtrain68 @Cool Hell yes the broad is lying. When the whole team writes a letter and then you quit.  Then having your best friend sue you and win in a lawsuit??? Fire her now.

ChickenWolf

@StephenCurtis Im fine with this women working in a variety of different fields, but she has proven she is not responsible enough to be entrusted with the well-being of collegiate athletes. Most schools have mandatory background checks and cannot legally hire you to teach if you have engaged in certain crimes. This is exactly like Rice....people that are disgusting enough to abuse their students do not learn. They only learn that their behaviour was not socially acceptable...they dont all of a sudden grow a conscience and realize that years of abusing and degrading teenagers wasn't right.. Dont forget that every single member of that volleyball team signed off on the alleged abuse. Not one player defended her.

Cool
Cool

@StephenCurtis @JimKirkwood1  Just wondering, when they release murderers do they give them a weapon to kill someone else? Do they release rapist and have them run a women's shelter?  You kind of sound like the president of Iran.. No proof of the Holocaust so now reason to believe the Jews.
