UPDATE (9:21 p.m.) – Steven Goff of the Washington Post reports via Twitter that the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chicago Fire have agreed to a trade that will send Robbie Rogers’ MLS rights to Los Angeles in exchange for the Galaxy’s leading scorer Mike Magee.

Magee, a native of Chicago, has scored six goals in 11 games for the Galaxy so far in 2013.

ORIGINAL POST - Months after coming out as gay and retiring from the game of soccer, American midfielder Robbie Rogers will make his return to the sport with Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, according to a USA Today report.

However, there is a potential roadblock to the deal not mentioned in the report. Rogers’ MLS rights are currently held by the Chicago Fire, meaning a deal would need to be made between the Chicago and Los Angeles clubs for Rogers to become the  first openly gay soccer player in Major League Soccer.

According to the USA Today report, Rogers cited a visit on April 25 to a group of 500 kids at the Nike Be True LGBT Youth Forum in Portland as an “epiphany.” Rogers referred to himself as a “coward” for stepping away from soccer after revealing his sexuality in February and wanted to return to use his platform to become a role model for kids.

Rogers reportedly reached out to longtime friend and future teammate Landon Donovan and garnered support from him. After considering the circumstances surrounding his return to soccer, Rogers said his life is now “in order” and he’s ready to return to the pitch.

I want to come back and be that voice, be that role model,” Rogers says. “I want to compete on the field. I want to make it back to the national team. I want to be a role model. I have a lot of motivating factors working for me right now.”

GOOD....brave choice THAT none of us understand BECAUSE we do not go to work and have hundreds of people screaming at us vile things AT our job.

Plus Galaxy my team:   AND Rogers has wheels and that's all the better for my team.

The media obsession with male sodomy continues.

Everyone knows that soccer is a gay sport, so this is not news.  Also, I agree with nbpt.  Why cant he just be a soccer player?  Why does he HAVE to be a gay soccer player?  If gays and lesbians are just like their hetero brethren, why is Robbie Rogers, the gay soccer player insisting on this label?  Just effing play soccer.

The guy can't just go and play? He has to be labelled 'gay' by the media. The problen with society is not society, it's the media that want to make an 'issue' of everything for the sake of 'sales'.

We really don't care to know if he's gay or not!

@sage80_wanker Sorry but I didn't read anything in the article about sodomy.  Maybe you are confusing issues!

@John4 FUNNY John how you troll soccer sites AND read articles about gay players......any deep lingering emotions you want to express?

@John4 Hi there.  My only question to you is why did Jackie Robinson HAVE to be the black baseball player instead of just a baseball player?  Why did Pitorius HAVE to be the handicapped sprinter?  Why did Arthur Ashe HAVE to be the black tennis player?  Why is Ichiro the Japanese baseball player.  Being gay or lesbian is a fact, just llike anything else and it's part of who a peron is so why HAVE to hide it?

@John4 Because being gay can still get you killed in America and Robbie's visibility as a gay athlete helps tear down barriers.  How awesome do you think it felt for African Americans when Jackie Robinson became the first black person to play pro baseball?  It's the same principle.

@nbpt The trade was stupid. Robbie Rogers isnt a good player. only reason why he gets media attention because of the Gay label.

@nbpt If you don't care then why are you writing on this blog?  Let him be the gay soccer player if that's his choice.

@CucamongaKing Any (deep) lingering emotions I want to express?  Nothing comes to mind.  If that changes, I will be SURE to let you know, though.

@Fidelio @John4 God I hate the Jackie Robinson and Black comparisons. its not "african american" its black. Just a pathetic PC term. And being gay is nothing like being black. sorry but using that is just stupid.

@Fidelio Fidelio - OK, so a gay soccer player that very very few people have heard of is coming out for the good of society (and gays) and is not just being a total attention hound?

@RomarioDelLago @bine @sage80_wanker Maybe not.  What do you mean?  Come on be brave and explain yourself.  Regarding sodomy, I was saying that the article in question was about sexual orientation, in other words the gender that a person is oriented to.  The article was not about sodomy or any other sexual practice.  Can't you make the distinction?

John. : are you sure you are not harboring latent feelings. For a guy like you who both hates soccer and gays I think it bizarre that you actively seek out stories like this and then spend more energy thinking about it and posting. Does this story trigger something in you ??

@nbpt @MrGameandShow Think about it, trade a guy who is your leading scorer for the rights of a guy who is only known for being openly gay. Ridiculous.

@nbpt @bine I did read and I do comprehend.  If you don't care about this issue then why are you writing about it?
