Matt Garza to make first Cubs start in 10 months
Matt Garza’s much anticipated return to the Cubs’ pitching rotation will begin Tuesday night after the club activated him earlier in the day.
Garza’s outing against the Pirates will be his first start since the Cubs shut him down last July with problems surrounding an elbow injury. A strained back muscle injury suffered during spring training extended Garza’s absence.
He was impressive in a rehab start last week for Des Moines, tossing 75 pitches in six shutout innings, after which Garza declared himself ready for his first MLB action in 10 months.
Garza’s return to the Cubs’ staff will move Carlos Villanueva (1-3) to the bullpen coming off his worst start of the year Tuesday against the Rockies, allowing seven runs and 12 hits in five innings.
