The Kansas City Chiefs hired former Nevada football coach Chris Ault as a consultant, reports the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Ault’s agent, Bob LaMonte, confirmed the news. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is also one of LaMonte’s clients.

The Chiefs traded for former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith in the offseason, who ran a version of the spread offense in college at Utah.

Ault invented the pistol offense which generally lines the quarterback up just a few yards behind center, which is closer than the shotgun formation, which has the quarterback five to seven yards behind the center.

Ault, 66, coached at Nevada for 28 seasons and was the athletic director there as well. He stepped down last December.
