Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan never graduated from Rutgers, contrary to school’s claim

Rutgers men’s basketball coach Eddie Jordan reportedly never actually graduated from Rutgers (Rich Schultz/Getty Images)

Rutgers hired coach Eddie Jordan to replace Mike Rice, after ESPN aired a video of the temperamental coach throwing basketballs at players and swearing at them. Rutgers brought in Jordan hoping that he would bring an end to the scrutiny and represent Rutgers well.

Jordan’s bio on Rutgers’ website calls him a 1977 grad who earned a degree in health and physical education. However, Deadspin has reported that Jordan’s transcript, obtained from the University, gives no indication that Jordan ever finished his degree.

Furthermore, a call to the registrar’s office made the situation quite clear. From Deadspin:

“He did not receive a degree from us,” an official there [said].

At the presser following his hire, Jordan thanked the Rutgers community for their patience as he worked out contract negotiations. He cited due diligence as playing a role in the length of time it took for him to be hired. From Deadspin:

“I want to thank [Rutgers president Robert] Barchi for his belief and trust in me. I’d like to thank our Board of Governors and our Board of Trustees who understood the meaning of due diligence. People have taken some criticism on the length of time, but the due diligence was very important in their minds and in their actions to get this thing right. And I’m glad that they chose me.”

For a University already under the microscope and concerned with due diligence, Rutgers overlooked the fact that Jordan, broadcast as an alumnus, never actually completed his degree, falling around 10 credits short of graduation, according to Deadspin.

And what difference would a degree in "health and p.e." make?  He could finish it easily by going back and reetaking that basket weaving class he flunked.

Eddie Jordan will set Rutgers basketball back 20 year with his clueless inept style of dumbness.

What Jordan may or may not claim re: his graduation status isn't the issue. The issue is that Rutgers is telling the world that they did their appropriate due diligence. That is what is causing the flap.

Eddie Jordan will set Rutgers Basketball back 50 years. Eddie is not qualified to coach.

This could be a simple mistake on the part of whom ever wrote Eddie Jordan's bio.  If Eddie stated that he "graduated" with a degree in Health Science, then yes, I agree that he should be terminated.  However, if he did not state that he graduated, but was majoring in Health Sciences and the author of the bio assumed that he graduated, he should not be terminated.  Finally, if he stated that he was/is an alumni of Rutgers, he did not lie.  The Webster's definiteion for Alumni is: a graduate or former student of a specific school, college, or university.  After the O'Leary debacle, that should have been a wake up call for coaches and universities to be diligent with vetting all applicants.  Stop the witch hunt folks and let the process run its course.  Rutgers will ultimately do the right thing, whether retaining Eddie or termination him based on his resume.  I like to think that they did their due diligence and is simply moving forward.  I find it difficult to believe that they did not know that he was 10 credits shy of his degree.  If I were a betting guy, I would be willing to bet that he will complete those 10 credits very soon.

Rutgers used to be a school of high academics and integrity and honor.  Now Rutgers hireds a recycled old man Eddie No Degree Jordan.  Having a head coach with no college degree at a fine academic institution like Rutgers is a shame.

He doesn't need a degree to be considered alumni.

They have to fire him. No excuses. He lied on his resume and that means dismissal. No exceptions or Rutgers loses whatever credibility it has left.

Coaches who lie on their resume are liars period. Post Jordans transcript and show us how dumb Eddie is?

Come on Eddie Jordan is a bum and always has been a coaching bum. Rutgers made a stupid hire but no one else wanted the job. Jordan is a floater just hanging floating at the top of the coaches toilet bow. Flush Jordan now?

just another liar.  should fire this chump, but they won't.  press will drop this quickly because of his color.

Was it  Georgia Tech that had hired a football coach and they found his bio said he had a masters degree but he really didn't, so they fired him?

Is the problem that he doesn't have a degree or is it that the degree was not attained at Rutgers?

I guess he better cram in 10 credits this summer. Summer school probably starts next week. He will do it if he really wants to coach for Rutgers

@Rickapolis did he lie, or did the University misprint something based on an assumption? Not trying to be a butt, the article was just really unclear on who actually claimed Jordan graduated from the school. If it was jordan they need to O'Leary him lol

 @Sun Devils

This is the new America don't you know, say what you want ,do what you want, lie to whomever you see fit, just like the leader of this once great country.  Yeah I brought politics into it , so what  truth is truth

@geoAZ  @Cool Notre Dame hired O'Leary away from Tech.  Rescinded offer a few days latter when they discovered misinformation in resume.

And i am guessing you only brought in politics because it applies to this situation in some other way other than they are both Black. Why not compare him to the leader of congress or some other political figure? Just a heads up. You did not bring in politics....you brought in racial prejudices.

@JohnRobert  @cry1baby2usa "It stopped when we got career politicians like Barney Frank.  (Note that he has accomplished NOTHING EVER, while in congress, except having homosexual liaisons with as many staff workers as humanely possible)."

I'm curious as to the ratio of humane vs inhumane in regard to former congressman Frank's homosexual liaisons. Additionally, I would also like to know how one differentiates between such acts.  Does JohnRoberts have past experience with humane and inhumane homosexual liaisons? Please, JohnRoberts, explain at what point a homosexual liaison, which is considered to be humane, crosses the line and becomes inhumane.

@JohnRobert It hasn't changed if anything it's stayed the same.Idiots like you just have a forum to spout your racist views in a public, yet still hidden way. This is a sports article yet you bring racist/political rants in anyway.By the way most of everything you touch has been touched by someone of another race.Anyway Eddie Jordan never said he was an Alumnus of Rutgers, they did.

@cry1baby2usa  When so many immigrants have changed the face of the country.  When class loses out to greed.  When style trumped substance.  When our idiotic media (whoops, that's redundant) actually believes that Obama was born in the USA despite a huge amount of evidence to the contrary.  (Born in Hawaii, but got a Connecticut SSN.  That could happen).  When out idiotic media (again, redundant) will not report or publish any of the overwhelming evidence that Barack Hussein Obama was born in Kenya - like his Grandmother's statement that she saw him, how ELSE would that be possible?  It would not.  When the slogan of the Democrats switched from "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what YOU can do for YOUR country" (think JFK) to its current "What handouts can I get from my government"?  It stopped being a great country when it began "outsourcing" all of our manufacturing (and JOBS) to other countries.  It stopped being a great country when it allowed plea bargains.  It stopped when people like Barack Hussein Obama are seen as being "pro" USA when he is clearly as "anti" USA as possible.  It stopped when we got career politicians like Barney Frank.  (Note that he has accomplished NOTHING EVER, while in congress, except having homosexual liaisons with as many staff workers as humanely possible).  It stopped when Abortion became legal.  (You can criticize me if you want, but a "fetus" is a living human being).  How many things have I missed?  It stopped when we, as a populace began believing the stupidity of "change change change", the stupidest campaign slogan of all time, and clearly, Obama has changed nothing.  His politician cronies are among the most crooked (and inept) of all time.  It stopped when we, as a country became "Barack Obama stupid".
