Surveys conducted by Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research has found that Tim Tebow is the most influential athlete in 2013, Forbes reported on Monday. Following Tebow on Forbes’ list are Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt and Derek Jeter as the most influential athletes of 2013.

Tebow, who has over 2.2 million followers on Twitter, appeared in 11 games for the Jets last season and accumulated just 39 yards passing on eight attempts. Stephen Master, Senior Vice President of Sports for Nielsen, said it’s “incredible” for a backup quarterback to be talked about so much but cited New York’s major media market as fueling Tebow’s influence.

Tebow was released by the Jets on April 29 and was recently offered a job as a quarterback coach for the Lingerie Football League.

This is why I don't read Forbes or give much credibility to anything attributed to them.

Sure.  why not place Collins in this position?  Go way right if you want...as usual...or get with humanity.    Homophobes are what need to be pacified.

Why has Timmy not had sex?  Bring support for all athletes.  Don't hide your homophobia behind anyone or any religion.  Timmy you are good and righteous.  If you are gay, you are moreso.  Anyway, that is your business.  How is SI putting out their "man" of the year when its only May?

Private and personal supposed to be very different.  Like Church and State.

How y'all doin' with that.  Note to all of you the mega basketball wonder kind from Baylor, oh ya,  a woman so no one cares?  She came out a day before Collins.  Sexism alive and well.  Multiple-marginalizations...look it up...

The Lesbian Baylor basketball phenom, or an amazing basketball person who happens to be lesbian.....put herzelf out there before Mr .Collins.   Oh ya.   men men men  No, I wont tell you about the Baylor sensation.  If you don't know.  Loook her up!!!!

Try it again,SI.  Write things again.  Don't make me have to to it for you.

I would like to thank President Malcolm Forbes for his naming an NFL out of the league never was as the most influential athlete of the year. Oh, wait, Malcolm is not president and Tebow is not the most influential athlete of the year.

Since when does divisive equal influential?  And since when  is "influence" measured by the number of idiot tweeters?

@lassenlou How many other athletes can stink badly enough to not sniff the field for an entire season and yet still drive so much conversation?  I can't wait for the Tebow storyline to go away but he's definitely influential.

@renee Divisive:: creating disunity or dissension .

Buy a dictionary, Renee, you badly need one.

@renee Divisive?  The guy has been nothing but an outstanding teammate wherever he has been, along with being an upstanding and generous citizen.   The fact that you and a bunch of envious cyber-screamers do not like him or his football skills hardly makes him a divisive figure.

@renee "Influence" doesn't necessarily indicate whether it is positive or negative in nature.  And it SURELY doesn't have anything to do with whether or not the athlete is any good at his or her respective job!  In the meantime, we're all here discussing a guy who couldn't even get on the field for the JETS......that could be considered influence.

@JoeCabot  @renee There are plenty of people who readily admit he's a good kid, a great role model, a stellar teammate......and still not like him.  For the most part it's not even Tebow's fault.  It's that particular group of fans that don't know how to separate "great person" from "horrible quarterback" that are so annoying..  Personally, I like the guy but I'm tired of my football coverage focusing on the worst qb of the last10 years.
