Former Green Bay Packers safety LeRoy Butler had his speaking engagement at a Wisconsin church cancelled on Tuesday after the Pastor reportedly told him to ask God for forgiveness for tweeting a “congrats” to Jason Collins for coming out.

According to Butler’s tweets over the last 24 hours, a member of the Church told him to “check the moral cause” and referenced the tweet about Collins. The former Packers safety was told to apologize, remove the tweet and ask God for forgiveness if he wanted to speak at the Church, an opportunity that would have earned him $8,500.

In a report Wednesday from the Milwaukee Sentinel-Journal, Butler said the Church tried to apologize for the comments, which he said he would accept but he will no longer consider speaking at the Church. The talk he was supposed to give at the Church was about bullying, and Butler said the Pastor is exemplifying a form of bullying by trying to get him to apologize for his congratulations to Collins.

“This is a form of bullying, what you’re doing. You’re trying to get me to do something I don’t want to do. He disagreed, and I said, ‘We agree to disagree’ and he said ‘No, I’m right and you’re wrong.’ “

Butler, who spent much of his childhood in a wheelchair or in leg braces, retired from the NFL in 2001 after a 12-year career with the Packers. He intercepted 38 passes in 181 games, won a Super Bowl in 1997 and was a four-time All-Pro selection.

Would someone  please take this opportunity to enlighten the world as to how you decide which parts of scripture to follow? Why is the admonition against homosexuality revered and followed and so many others ignored? This is an honest question to which I have never ever received an answer. From touching pigskin,to working/playing on the Sabbath,to divorce,to wearing mixed fabrics, adultery ,are all equally listed and admonished.....then of course ,the apparent approval of owning slaves etc....Why is the anti-gay portion picked and the rest ignored???? This question was asked several times by various commenters below and completely ignored . Surely someone has some ability to at least attempt to explain it.........

What got my attention was a Church shucking out $8500 for a little speech, I see God and the cost of/for God is really starting to collide now days.

Makes you wonder how much is getting funneled to political campaigns under the table.

Only God should judge. However, if people want people fired or disciplined for voicing their opinion against homosexuality, then they should have the same expectation for those that voice an opinion for it. Otherwise they would simply be hypocrites.

If he was going to make $8500 for a single appearance, imagine how much the preacher pockets...  Tax free!  Do church followers really believe that their "donations" are going toward building funds or whatever mumbo jumbo these con artists tell them?  I don't agree with any organized religions, but I find that the biggest athiests are the preachers, because if they really believed in a god (or invisible man in the sky listening to/judging everyone and is constantly in need of money as proof of faith) they wouldn't mislead people, steal their money and guilt them into wasting their lives away living for death.  Christianity was used to keep the slaves in check, toil in the fields, take our abuse, let us have our way with your women, separate you from your family, strip you of all of your basic humans right...  But you'll reap the rewards when you die!  Yes, mental slavery is still in effect today.

Don't you just hate when people cherry pick scriptures to defend their position?

God's right to take life should deeply humble us to repentance, since we all justly deserve to be killed (Luke 13:3-5)

Let God be God and us be repented.

Last one.

Exodus 21: 20-21. When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished.  If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property.

And Jesus' position

Matthew 5:17: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets....

Wake up! You've been lied to. Stop cherry-picking scripture. The Christian God murders babies, innocents. Myths, just like Zeus.

wycliffec
wycliffec

Exodus 21: 7-11When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are.  If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.  But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her.  And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter.  If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife.  If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment.

Apologists, please begin the rationalization....

It has NEVER been acceptable to "own" another human. Not any time, place or condition

wycliffec
wycliffec

Why would anyone profess to be a Christian??? I especially don't understand how anyone who's ancestry suffered under slaver could worship THIS God.

Leviticus 25: 44-46

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you.  You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land.  You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance.  You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way

One of many references to slavery as being condoned. Let's don't talk about murder.....

If Leroy is who he says he is, he should not be congratulating a Gay coming out. Either Leroy believes what he preaches or he doesnt, and sorry folks, the bible he speaks from has no room for congratulating Gays, on the contrary it has stern warnings for them.

Funny how when people stand up for their biblical beliefs they are called bigots.

God does not hate Gays as some may want to paint that picture, just the lifestyle as anyone else whether  Gay or not that live in a illicit lifestyle.

Another example of a "Christian" church having no resemblance to the teaching of Christ. Do these folks continue the Biblical era cultural practice of killing women who committ adultery, punish people for wearing clothes comprised of two fabrics or for eating shellfish, do they support slavery? No, they pick and choice making excuss to make life for gay people Hell on earth.

I used to like SI.   I love football, or rather I used to, because it WAS A-POLITICAL and it BROUGHT PEOPLE TOGETHER ACROSS racial and ideological lines.

THANKS SO MUCH TO YOU FAR LEFT FANATICS in CNN who now control SI.   THANKS FOR POLITICIZING THE CHURCH, SODOMY, FREE SPEECH and INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS.   The church has a right to its beliefs even it it does not express them well.     SI, by your words and tone, you obviously have nothing but contempt for Christianity, even in regards to a Church's feeble attempt at maintaining some semblance of moral standards.

Best regards as you promote the "virtues" of Sodomy.

@fdfny Homosexuality is a form of mental illness.  No one chooses to be that way no more than you or I would choose to be an alcoholic.  But, to engage in homosexual behavior is a choice.  No one should be proud of being a homosexual.  But, no one should be criticized for being one either.  For Jason Collins to come out and admit his condition, is like me coming out and saying I am a heroin addict.  For Leroy Butler to say "congrats" to Jason Collins for being a homosexual, is like him congratulating me for being a drug addict or an alcoholic.  Why would you do that?  I think what Leroy Butler meant was that we love you unconditionally for what and who you are.  I am sure Leroy Butler would want Jason Collins to seek professional help, and pray that god gives him the strength to say "NO", and remain abstinent.  Jason Collins is black and gay and runs a much higher risk of acquiring HIV.  He is in for the fight of his life.  Shame on the the church not to ask for a clarification from Leroy Butler, who thru all accounts is an all around good guy, before they give him an ultimatum!

@thatmanstu   The key to understanding this issue is knowing that the Old Testament law was given to the nation of Israel, not to Christians. Some of the laws were to reveal to the Israelites how to obey and please God (the Ten Commandments, for example). Some of the laws were to show the Israelites how to worship God and atone for sin (the sacrificial system). Some of the laws were intended to make the Israelites distinct from other nations (the food and clothing rules).

None of the Old Testament law is binding on us today. When Jesus died on the cross, He put an end to the Old Testament law (Romans 10:4;Galatians 3:23-25;Ephesians 2:15).

In no way did Mr. Butler voice an opinion on homosexuality pro or con....what he did was voice support for a person making a very brave and life changing admission.  And he was right about the pastor trying to bully him.  To try and get him to recant by using the speaking engagement as a carrot was bullying.  If he had said we cannot support your opinion, therefore you cannot speak.  thatis not bullying but standing by our belief...as A** backwards as it may be.

@PhD2014  How about we use that same logic with african americans. If you can be fired for being racist against african americans, you should be able to be fired for looking at blacks as equals who deserve the rights and treatment us white people enjoy. Or how about we use a more extreme example. If you can be fired for being pro-terrorism, you should be able to be fired for being anti-terrorism. Im not even saying its wrong for you to be anti-homosexuality, just that your statement is completely illogical. Hopefully that analogy allowed you to view things in a different light... although somehow i doubt it.

@LeroyTeneightyp Pastors pay income tax just like everyone else.  In fact, if they are provided a home by the church, that also counts as income, meaning the tax rates on their liquid cash income is much higher than a person in a traditional job who can buy a house, deduct the interest, and are earning equity in a real asset.

@j7apple you must be a blind and deaf fanatic of that piece of crap, hateful, scum-filled church in kansas. right? that explains it all. and the comments about your "logic" i made below are not about a hateful, murderous god(is that why there have been throughout history and in the present so many mass murderers who kill because the bible and other so-called sacred books give them so many wonderful examples?) just answer the questions. they are direct, plain and simple: do u believe in slavery, do u support the punishing of disobedient children with death, do you believe in selling your daughter into slavery, do you believe that men have the right to rape women? the bible promotes and condones all those disgusting acts. so you MUST support them too. could you answer the questions without spin and dogmatic bs?

@j7apple the bible was written by man.  based on man.  what man wanted.  God did not come down and tell them what to write.  if that happened God is a racist slave monger who believes death is the only salvation.  so dont say Bulter cant be happy for one man and still be a Christian.  The worse thing about religion is its followers.

@j7apple does it not bother you how christians cherry pick what the bible says? you support enslaving foreigners and their offspring, selling ones daughter into slavery, punishing your disobedient children by killing them, killing people who work on the sabbath, stoning people to death and so on and on and on? that is all in your cherished bible written by a bunch of guys over 2000 years ago based on the conditions they lived under 2000 years ago. do you believe in all that unspeakable violence and abuse? you MUST because its ALL written very clearly in the bible your moral guide.

@j7apple  @thatmanstu You know the problem with the "old law"/"new law" argument? The same people who make that argument then turn around and cite OLD LAW to justify castigation of gay people. Jesus NEVER EVER said a word against them. One would think that would be a hint to people who supposedly follow Christ, but it is not . . . .

@j7apple “ Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor practicing homosexuals nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.  So,you are equally morally outraged at the greedy and dishonest swindlers? All in all,the translation from the Greek is pretty damn ambiguous and does not merit the moral certainty by which you heap scorn and condemnation  upon our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, teachers, pilots, sailors and Marines, pilots, engineers, scientists, firemen, policemen, doctors, lawyers, accountants, sportswriters, athletes, employers, employees, coworkers and fellow human beings...

@ChickenWolf  @PhD2014 Chicken, thanks for pointing out the lunacy of this false equivalence. A pro-rape sentiment expressed by a cop needs to be respected the same as an anti-sexual assault message spoken by another cop? I think not. That is lunacy.

@leyla  @j7apple What I believe is a God who dealt with a very unrepentant and very rebellious people several thousand years ago, (a lot like today but God has a bit more mercy on us now as he sent his son to die for us)

j7apple

@RayHuggyBearYoung There is not enough space to relate what the inspired Word of God is. But God utilized a select group to write His words. The death and murders you read about was a result of a very rebellious people. Go IS Judge and Jury.

If Butler was congratulating Collins on coming out to get get help, then great. We all know thats not the reason.

I will concur that many people do enjoy a religion of convenience to serve their own selfish agenda..I will let God deal with that in time.

NO WHERE in my comment did I say or even imply that God is not a God of Love.   The church has a right to its views as do I.     You have a right to your views and practices as well ... sordid may they be.

j7apple
j7apple

@BrianT.Robinson  @thatmanstu  Without getting into theology, either you believe the bible as the inspired word of God or you don't.  Jesus is speaking per se with every word written, not just his own first person text.

The New Testament is clear in Romans 1:26-27

For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error.

Those who want to justify homosexuality will do so to their demise.

j7apple
j7apple

@thatmanstu I kind of expected you wanted more than an answer above.  I would place all of the above you mentioned  in the same category as a Gay fellow, and I am outraged when the media places certain individuals on a pedestal with attributes you named.

I am myself not worthy to cast stones and the intent is not there. I will say we have someone to go to with indiscretions who forgives us, but also says "Go, and sin no more"

Without getting to preachy, repentance is an action word., and I am fairly sure someone in any immoral lifestyle Gay or not, can ask for forgiveness, but then is expected to turn away from that lifestyle. Not promote it for the world to see and be congratulated for it.

Doubt this gives you what you want, but I tried.
