Report: Jets QB Geno Smith leaves agents after falling in NFL Draft

NFL

Four days after he was picked in the second round of the NFL Draft, rookie quarterback Geno Smith has left his agents, reports Sports Business Journal‘s Liz Mullen on Twitter.

Smith, the former West Virginia standout, was expected by most draft pundits to be the top quarterback taken this year. His name was floated as an early first-round pick, though a fall into the second round started to look like a possibility closer to the draft. The New York Daily News‘ Manish Mehta reports that fall is the reason Smith left Select Sports.

Smith later denied that he fired his agent “because of the whole draft experience.”

#Jets QB Geno Smith on Firing Agent: I don’t want to shed too much light on it but it’s not because of the whole draft experience.#SXMSports

— SiriusXM NFL Radio (@SiriusXMNFL) April 30, 2013

The Jets grabbed Smith and turned their quarterback situation into an even bigger circus. The team took a first step toward solving its issues by releasing Tim Tebow on Monday. Whether the team holds on to starter Mark Sanchez or hands the reigns to Smith remains to be seen.

Mehta also reported that Smith won’t join Jay-Z’s stable of clients, which already includes Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz.

Geno, as a Pat's fan I want to thank the JETS for selecting you.  We all knew Tim Tebow can't play QB, but at least his IQ is higher than a house plant

Jets are also rans, they get worse every year, this coming season they will under preform worse than last year.

Probably be the only NFL record of 0-16

Go Tebow, you are lucky indeed to leave this rag tag bunch of losers.

This new QB is crying the blues already

GENO - and another thing:  If you were clearly the number one overall pick, then wouldn't the teams drafting 2, 3, 4, 5 etc have rushed up to the podium (or phoned in very quickly as they do now) to immediately select you?  Why didn't that happen?  Because you were drafted about where you should have been.

The real losers in this whole scenario (other than the obvious immature QB from WVU)?  The Bills.  Selecting EJ Manual at 16 was a huge reach, and will prove to be so in the coming months.  (September to December).

Geno Smith - stop being such a yay hoo (sp?)!  The fact is that you were the 39th player taken.  Deal with you situation like a winner, not like a loser.  You're in NY now, and successful QBs there are set up to make millions in endorsements.  Make the best of your situation.  Stop crying over spilled milk.  Your agent(s) had nothing to do with your draft position.  Your performance at WVU and at the various combines is what created your draft position.  If all those "experts" were wrong, and they certainly could be, then go out on the field and prove it.  If you truly thought you were going to be the number one overall pick then clearly you did not read ANY of the mock drafts published in magazines and on cnnsi for months leading up to the draft.  Everybody knew that the Chiefs were going to draft an OL, and everybody also knew that the Chiefs traded for Alex Smith from the 49ers.  Why in the world would they be drafting another QB when they have so many needs.  Time to come back to reality, time to quit sulking like a teenager, time to grow up, and time to do your best to prove everybody wrong with your performance at camp with the Jets.  Most importantly, stop being such a baby.

Dude is completely delusional and out of touch with reality if he really expected to be 1st overall.  Everyone on the planet knew the Chiefs were taking an O-lineman first overall... except Geno Smith, apparently.  Alex Smith isn't the greatest QB ever, but the Chiefs obviously didn't give up significant picks for him just to draft a QB with their 1st overall selection.

If Smith's agents led him to believe otherwise, then I suppose they deserved to be fired.  But my sneaking suspicion is that it was mostly just Geno's stubbornly wishful thinking.  And now he's firing his agents in a de facto temper tantrum.   As if it's their fault he fell.  Agents don't have much to do with a team's draft board.

I don't understand why the media labels the Jet's QB situation as a "circus."  If you had Sanchez, wouldn't you be looking to replace him?  And if you had Tebow, wouldn't you release him?  Seems to me that they are taking logical steps.  Smith falls to the 2nd round and they grab him.  I would have.  They gave Sanchez one last big chance last year and he failed them, big time.  They would be crazy to give him another year with no competition.  That's just throwing away your season.

It takes Geno Smith  2 hours to watch 60 minutes on Sundays.

Look at the shape of Geno's oblong head?? Not enough room in there for intelligence. watch.

the agents caused him to fall to round 2????  hello???

Geno Smith looks stupid and the NFL realized that.

So what, he fired his agent.  Some agents are incompetent.  They get fired all the time.  Even if he's not incompetent, if Smith feels he can't trust his agent then he should replace him with someone else.   Just like any of us would with a lawyer or realtor that we feel we can't trust.  No big deal.

Isn't this like firing your lawyer because your marriage didn't work out?

He fired his agent for mishandling and not providing enough spin on his shortcomings. Not sure it's fair but it's his career and his prerogative. I don't want him telling me that I should stick with my insurer just because leaving them is seen as immature.

IMMATURITY . . . Those NFL scouts hit the nail on its head.

When he walked onto draft stage on draft day you could see smoke and flames coming out of his ears, so this isn't a surprise. Wonder who he'll blame for coming incompletions.

If I kept hearing reporters and columnists calling the team a circus, I'd make darn sure none of you were invited inside the tent.  Ever.

It's like he was born to play for the Jets...

Sounds like they replaced one clown with another.  The three ring circus will continue.

Did he manage to lose the game tape from his final college performance?

Bearsclone
Bearsclone

An agent can't delete the recordings of you looking lost during the second half of your final college season.

Pro scouts and GMs look at that and they say "Why is every one able to adjust to him, instead of the other way around?" and they realize that maybe you're not putting in the work to prepare mentally.

When they talk to people around the team, and start getting the kinds of reports they were afraid of (that you don't work hard on the mental aspect of the game) then they begin to wonder why they should spend a 1st round pick on you.

It's possible that a year from now, Rob Ryan will be fired and some one will come into that organization who knows how to develop a QB, and it's possible that when or if that happens, Geno Smith will flourish.  But there's a reason why he wasn't drafted very high, in spite of his obvious athletic talent, and that has nothing to do with his agent.

Robert35
Robert35

I guess that it was his agents fault that he isn't all that good and teams watched film on him, bad scouting reports as well as questionable personality traits. Man up for a change Geno and look in the mirror.

The personality stuff put forward by Nolan Nawrocki is starting to seem slightly less outrageous...

Hey Geno while you're at it sue the NFL,since you were supposedly a first rounder who got picked in second round. Also remember the ppl who said you are to immature, you just proved it.

Will he fire his next agent if he isn't a starter for the Jets this season?

Billyed55

Maybe he fell cause he isn't as good as he thinks he is and then apparently blames others for his short comings.  Sounds like a great 'team' player and a perfect fit for the Jets.

The shape of Geno Smith's head shouts out dumbness. Look at it and tell me Geno looks intelligent.  Agents don't spread the rumors of poor work ethics-inability to grasp the offense-lack of leadership. Geno will not make it.

@DanaBunner You say Sanchez  is to blame for the Jet woes This is a team sport and The O line you were working with last year sucked There was very little help with the receivers. your defense Was not much better. If iwas the one that had the team I would fire the GM as well as the coach. You are only as good as the players that take the field every week.

@clemwilson1970 Your comment reflects your intelligence as well.

DavidandTracyAgee

@DanaBunner I agree except that I believe agents do most of their work before the draft.  By firing him now I think that means that the agent worked for free.  The work performed probably involved costs such as flights, meals, and I would assume money spent on and given to the client.  Maybe I am wrong about the above but I don't think so.  Unless Geno is compensating the agent in some way this appears bush league to me.  Like others I think Geno is probably putting blame on the wrong person.

Bearsclone

If you leave your insurer because you keep getting pulled over for speeding, that would be a sign of immaturity (blaming others for your own weaknesses).

Or possibly he forgot that he ended his college career with a 2-6 stretch.

@Bearsclone It would be Rex Ryan that would have to be fired, but I get your point.

@Robert35 42 tds to 6 picks is pretty dam good not to mention he won seven games with a pop warner team on defense which is amazing...  Wvus def last year was the worst i have ever seen period. there corner ran like 5.0 40s.

@TheMantage Yeah... Same with Cam.  Somehow I think he will still be branded a racist regardless.

@eddiej just becuz u fire ur agent doesnt make u immature.... agents are and always will e known as sharks usually so i dont see why it matters who he fires and hires as his agent, agents get paid big money so not for sure why ppl are feeling sorry for them

Robert18
Robert18

@Cool not likely... if it was his agents that advised not to play the senior bowl then eh shoudl have fired them it was a good chance to shake off the under par bowl performance.

Robert18

@clemwilson1970 the fact u assume anything about somebody because of the shape of there head proves how smart u are lol... he may be immature but if u have ever heard the guy talk you would know he is not stupid not to mention he knows his football fairly well just watch his interview with jon gruden.

@clemwilson1970 The shape of his head?  Are you freaking serious?  That's the same standard the Nazis used to assert Aryan supremacy.  I can understand criticizing Geno for his play on the field and for his childishness in the Green Room, but the shape of his head?  If he is stupid, which I see no evidence of, at least he didn't use a blog post to prove it.

John4
John4

@tinsink5   tinsink5 - I have to agree.  There is lots of blame to be spread around for the Jets debacle.  They need to improve in every area.  Possibly their HC is better suited for Def Coordinator?  (No hate, just examining the Jets' record over the past few years).

tinsink5

@tinsink5  @DanaBunner That just tells me that the so called experts don;t have ant better Idea of how a team is going to do then you or I

@tinsink5 @DanaBunner That's weird because Pro Football Focus had the Jets offensive line ranked as third best NFL line in 2012.

usameos6

@DavidandTracyAgee  @DanaBunner Actually - I believe that most agents do their work after the draft as that is when contract negotiations start.  Even though salaries are somewhat set based on the CBA - the issue is how much is guaranteed, what performance bonuses are there, etc. etc. etc.  My guess on what happened is that he started talking with other players about there representation at the draft and may have found someone that he believes will get him a better deal for a lower percentage ......

Plus - hasn't Metta gotten in trouble before for playing a little loose with 'facts' around the Jets?  I'm a little reluctant to believe media quotes that aren't attributed to actual people.

Robert18
Robert18

@donald5 its amazing he won seven games last to be honest, Ive been a WVU fan my whoel life and not onyl was that there worst def i have ever seem but possible the worst defense i have ever seen it college football period.  the fact he won 7 games for them last year is amazing.

Bearsclone
Bearsclone

@John59 What's weird about that is I originally wrote "Rob" then thought "No, Rob was in Dallas.  It's Rex that is in New York, has a tat of Sanchez, and likes women's feet."

And yet I somehow still left it as "Rob."

Oh well, I think every one still gets my point.

@donald5  @clemwilson1970  @MyDogWally Hey, Donald, I realize that using the Nazis is a threadbare exercise, but if the poster is going to make judgments on someone's intellect or character based on the shape of his head ... or his nose ... or his lips -- then the comparison is appropriate.  If I could find a better metaphor than the Nazis, I'd be all over it.  But thanks for inspiring me to look up "Godwin's Law" on Wikipedia.  I learned something today.
