Jets will keep Mark Sanchez on roster into preseason, according to report

NFL

Two days after New York Jets general manager John Idzik would not say whether much-maligned starting quarterback Mark Sanchez would remain on the team through training camp, Newsday’s Bob Glauber reported that the team intends to keep him at least through the preseason.

Glauber also reported that the Jets will give Sanchez a shot to compete for the starting job, along with former Jaguars quarterback David Garrard and the newly drafted Geno Smith.

Glauber’s report isn’t particularly surprising. But after the Jets selected Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Idzik wouldn’t say if Sanchez would remain on the roster through training camp — or even throughout organized team activities.

The Jets, though, have no reason to part ways with Sanchez at this point. Thanks to the contract extension he signed after the Jets failed to court Peyton Manning last year, they will have to pay him $8.25 million this season whether he is on their roster or not.

Sanchez, McElroy, Smith and Jarrard. One of those has to go, and for the teams sake, money shouldn't be te determinate factor.

Isn't there more about the Jets that doesn't involve Sanchez... Do they expect Geno to operate under the same offensive alignment as Sanchez??? How can you not design an offense of a "run with a gun'" ala RGIII, Wilson or Kaepernick, after drafting Geno, with Sanchez as backup.

@TA1 To be successful they will have to redo their offense or develop packages that play to Smith's strengths...

Because that would make sense, and they're the Jets.

Just imagine how many hot dogs he can buy with $8.25 million
