Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price went on a lengthy Twitter rant Sunday night after a contentious back-and-forth between Price and home-plate umpire Tom Hallion led to Hallion calling him a “liar.”

Things started to heat up as Price walked off the mound in the seventh inning of an eventual 8-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. On Price’s second-to-last pitch of the inning — a 2-2 fastball to Dewayne Wise — he thought he threw a “perfect pitch” for strike three. Hallion called it a ball. Price struck out Wise, swinging, on the next pitch.

“I was mad at myself and I didn’t say a single word to the umpire, I didn’t look at him and he yells at me to ‘Throw the ball over the [expletive] plate,’ and that’s why our dugout went nuts. They heard him say it,” Price told reporters after the game, according to MLB.com.

“That’s terrible. You don’t speak to people that way. I didn’t disrespect him. I went to talk with him after the first inning. I was calm. That’s terrible.”

Price’s teammates would erupt again — when word came that Hallion called Price a “liar” for saying Hallion had yelled at him.

“I’ll come right out bluntly and say he’s a liar,” Hallion told a pool reporter about Price, according to MLB.com. “I’m denying what he said I said pretty strongly. I said, ‘Just throw the ball.’ That’s all I said to him.”

The Rays’ clubhouse did not take kindly to that accusation. And Price wrote a lengthy diatribe on Twitter explaining his case after the game. Here’s some of it:

Tough call on who the bigger a-hole is in this situation. They may be equal in size.

Based on what I've read, I think the Rays need to man up a bit, however, cooler heads need to prevail.

Shut up and play the game you prima donna. You play with a ball for a living. It is not like the guy put on a white hood and burned a cross on your front lawn and called you an oreo. Price, be thankful for what you have... you are an uneducated moron, who makes millions of dollars. If an ump wants to call you out, then respect that.. he is in control, you are simply a monkey on puppet strings doing things to entertain us.. so entertain and shut up.

First day of Umpire school should be just make the calls and don't get involved in anything personal.

Every day, umpires are begging the world to be replaced by technology... maybe one of these days we should grant their wish?  Yes, it's decided we should.

Yeah, David Price is a lair, if you watch the video, first off, he is cussing the whole way back to the dugout, and he definitely looks at the ump as he goes. Sorry, can't lie like that when it is caught on tape. Now is that enough to get ejected for, hell no, the ump took it too far because he knew he blew the call and then instead of just letting it drop, took a tough guy stance over absolutely nothing. I have no idea if the ump cussed at Price, that is never shown.

There's tons of cameras and mics at a game, I would think this he said/she said argument would be pretty easy to figure out.

Umpire's are a joke - their egos bigger than any players - cuz they wished they could play, but in the end, they could only call games.  I saw this whole thing and Price is right...this ump needs a reprimand.

MLB umpires are way too powerful and way too arrogant. They need to be reminded that nobody pays to watch them.

The important thing is he's not letting it bother him. Geez, take your bloated paycheck, hit the clubs & blow off some steam.  You're not curing cancer, Price, you're a pitcher.  And haters gonna hate in life. get over it already.

More Twitter nonsense. I'm tired of hearing about it.

Hallion had no business saying anything to Price.  Price was walking off the field, not even looking at Hallion, when the umpire decided that he needed to become part of the game and yell at a player.   I don't spend my hard earned money or limited time to see umpires yell at players or become part of the show.  Umpires need to remember that the good ones are never noticed, and the bad ones like Hallion are giving the good ones a bad name.  He should be fined and suspended for this nonsense.  Whether he cursed or not, he clearly yelled at a player who was not saying anything to him, or even looking at him, thereby causing a confrontation that didn't need to happen.  Tom Hallion - no one cares what you have to say. Please shut up and do your job. BTW - you clearly missed the strike 3 call that made Price mad. Watch the replay and try to get better at your job.  tyia.

Wow...how did we ever communicate or resolve conflicts before Twitter? Why not be a man and talk to the guy face to face instead of putting it out on Twitter for all to see? Who cares anyway if he dropped an F-bomb? You're a grown man and I'm sure it's not the first time you've heard that word. Not if you made it past middle school, anyway. Get over yourself.

how many times did the dugout "erupt"? Are we talking baseball or volcanoes?

If they have a mike that caught the ump actually saying the F-bomb, then he should be suspended for some number of games. If they have it and the ump is right, then Price should get fined or suspended.

@MARK7 Um, actually David Price went to Vanderbilt. You may have heard of it. It's actually a very prestigious school. Also, you sound like an idiot.

@MARK7 You are the one paying to watch these guys play games.  Maybe you are the one being played like a puppet.

@DMichaelMosher But Price didn't look at Hallion until Hallion made his comments about throwing the ball over the plate.   If Hallion had just done his job and kept his mouth shut, Price wouldn't have said a word to him.  But Hallion is too important for that, and had to instigate a confrontation to show the world he is a big man and isn't going to allow any player's body language to get the better of Tom Hallion.  Great mindset for a MLB umpire.  He should be fined and/or suspended until he learns to cool down.

@jayboog68 Because if a player walks up to an ump and raises hell, the player gets suspended.

@lplrmg lol I caught that too. It's like being "pretty sure"....lolol
