The National Hockey League is planning to schedule two outdoor games next season at Yankee Stadium, one of  six outdoor contests set to take place next season, ESPN.com reports.

Both games involved New York City-area teams. One planned game would be for the New York Rangers to take on the New Jersey Devils and the second game would have the Rangers playing the New York Islanders.

The reports says that the plan is to play both games in the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII, which will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Feb. 2., 2014.

Other outdoor games include the Toronto Maple Leafs taking on the Detroit Red Wings Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium, the Anaheim Ducks against the Los Angeles Kings Jan. 29 at Dodger Stadium, the March 1 contest between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field and  the Ottawa Senators and the Vancouver Canucks in a March 2 tilt at BC Place in Vancouver.

The outdoor game is, or at least was, something special, something that harkens back to when we were kids playing literally on frozen ponds, or shooting pucks in my flooded, frozen back yard in Chicago. Of course big money changes innocent pleasures, and now it won't be long until these games are just another over-priced NHL game, played in weather conditions fans won't want to put up with for something that's just another game. Turning something special into something mundane seems inevitable; I guess time will tell. But then, after losing so many fans like they did this year, the NHL pretty much has to do something to try to get us back.
