NHL announces initiative supporting gay athletes
The NHL announced a comprehensive measure in support of gay rights for athletes on Thursday, reports the New York Times. The league formed a partnership with the You Can Play Project, an advocacy group that combats homophobia in sports through training and counseling activities. It is considered one of the most comprehensive measures taken by a major men’s sports league in support of rights for homosexuals.
From the New York Times report:
“Our motto is Hockey Is for Everyone, and our partnership with You Can Play certifies that position in a clear and unequivocal way,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in the statement. “We are delighted to reaffirm through this joint venture with the NHL Players’ Association that the official policy of the NHL is one of inclusion on the ice, in our locker rooms and in the stands.”
