Report: Novak Djokovic ‘in tears’ over ankle injury, says it ‘doesn’t look good’

Novak Djokovic was brought to tears in the aftermath of an ankle injury he suffered during a Davis Cup match on Sunday, according to broadcaster Craig Gabriel.

Djokovic suffered the injury during the first set of a Davis Cup match against the United States’ Sam Querrey. Djokovic played on and eventually went on to win the match in four sets, giving Serbia an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the Davis Cup quarterfinal.

“Injuries are part of the sport and you try to avoid them as an athlete as much as you can,” Djokovic told reporters afterward, according to the Associated Press. “The nature of the injury is still to be determined.

“One hour, one hour and a half after the end of the match, all I can say is it doesn’t look good.”

Gabriel reported that Djokovic came to tears during an interview with a Serbian television station:

The ankle injury could affect Djokovic’s readiness for the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, which he said he considers his home event.

“It’s swollen, and when it’s swollen it’s definitely not a good first sign,” Djokovic said, according to the AP. “I’m going to do everything I can in my power to recover till that tournament. How realistic that is, I don’t know what to tell you.”

He might have some soreness and it might be a bit swollen, but I doubt his ankle is bad.  I mean, he played another 2+ hours on it!!  If he had really damaged it, he wouldn't have been able to play on it even with pain killers.  Much ado about nothing...

Bummer.  Novak seems like such a nice guy, good sport, and a great #1.  I truly enjoyed his prowess taking the #1 ranking with his amazing backhand takedown of Nadal's forehand (that had destroyed Federer's backhand and #1 ranking).  Wishing him a speedy recovery!

emotions are big for sure, playing for serbia is one big honour and joy, on the other side there is this injury, its not good, not good at all... i dont know whats it gonna be, i hope it will be okay...
