Doug Gottlieb apologizes for awkward ‘white man’s perspective’ comment

NCAAB

CBS college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb almost immediately apologized Thursday night after delivering an awkward comment about how he brings a “white man’s perspective” to the CBS set.

After being introduced by host Greg Gumbel, Gottlieb made the awkward comment on the set with four other African-American co-hosts — Gumbel, Kenny Smith, Greg Anthony and Charles Barkley.

“Cream rising to the crop. I don’t know why you guys asked me, I’m just here to bring diversity to the set here. Give the kind of white man’s perspective on things from the point guard position,” Gottlieb said, according to USA Today.

All four co-hosts immediately looked away, and Smith told him he was “swimming upstream.” Later, CBS released a statement from Gottlieb, who remained on air throughout the night.

“It was not a smart thing to say and I apologize,” Gottlieb said, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Later, during halftime of the game between Wichita State and La Salle, Barkley addressed Gottlieb’s comment by saying that Gottlieb was just making a joke and blamed “all those idiots” on Twitter for making it seem controversial.

“Listen — me Kenny, Greg Anthony, and Greg Gumbel did not take that personally, so all you people at home who have got no life and who are talking bad about Doug Gottlieb — get a life. It is over with, and it’s no big deal,” Barkley said.

I thought it was funny.  I wasn't offended in anyway.  We are to sensitive when we can't even acknowledge  racial difference in a respectful, non-offensive way.  No need to apologize.  Hell I went to Halloween party dressed as the token black guy.  Wore black warm ups, black t-shirt printed out beer and game token cut them into circle glued them onto shirt.  If it had been three white commentators and Charles Barkley sat down and made same comment we would have thought it was funny.

@rukiddingme nailed it! What other perspective could Doug give. The man, joking or not, said exactly what he meant. Sooner or Later the media has to be stopped from making people apologize for who we are. And everyone of you overly sensitive, politically correct IDIOTS needs to Shut the hell up and get a life of your own to live. Anyone offended by what he said shouldn't be and has control of your remote control. Move on!

It was funny! We have gotten way too sensitive on issues of race in this country. Get a life!

I think I respect Charles Barkley now more than ever.  He realized (as did everyone with half a brain) that the guy was making an ill-advised attempt at humor.  He also stood up for what was right instead of jumping on the bandwagon, as it appears Kenny Smith tried to do.  And if you look at the comment from a technical point of view, he (Gottlieb) was telling the truth.  Of course it was a white man's perspective; the comment was made by a white man (the only white man on the set, BTW.  How come some of these race-baiters aren't making an issue of that little tidbit?  They (white men) were underrepresented on that set.  See how ridiculous these things can get?  And it further precludes any meaningful  dialogue on the subject).  Would anyone have said anything about it if one of the other anchormen said that their comments were from a black man's perspective?  Methinks not.  Because they were speaking from a black man's perspective.  This is a perfect example of why the race card is losing so much credibility.  There is a certain element of society that plays it every chance they get, whether it applies or not.  Mr. Gottlieb owes no one an apology and Mr. Barkley deserves kudos for standing up and telling everyone that was trying to turn this non-issue into something it wasn't to "get a life."  He's exactly right.  It's no big deal.

Quit it media.  Report sports instead of interpreting.  The media has become the BIGGEST source of racism in this world...

I wish more people would take Charles' advice. Too many people are sensitive to anything anyone says nowadays. Another reason why political correctness is an utter joke that needs to die. Just full of double standards and quite racist at times.

I don't think many people were "offended" by it, it was just a dumb thing to say.  He thought he'd try to be funny but the timing was terrible and he ended up looking like a moron.  It's conceivable he could have made a similar statement/joke with a little more tact and much better timing and it could have worked just fine.  Barkely tried to bail him out after Kenny spoke, saying they would get him back later.  Overall, total dufus move on Gottlieb's part.   Is it just me, or does he look like he spends a lot of his time, ahem, partying?  He looks like he got up at 2:30 p.m.

Give me a break...if it were a black man on set and he said "I'm here to give the brotha's perspective, not one thing would be said.

If you've followed Gottlieb on ESPN, you know he's prone to putting his foot in his mouth from time to time.  His attempted interview of Jim Mora, Jr. was a classic example.  That's just the Douger.

If Barkely's on a set with all white guys and says the same thing in reverse, everyone think it's funny.    A complete non-issue.

Bring back the days when men were men. Too many sensitive wimps today and girly men. The comments were fine and funny. Today there are nothing but weak people sensitive over color. Deal with it. Grow a pair wimps.

Sorry Doug, but the white man's perspective is what the Gumbels are paid for, guess you didn't get the memo...

No apology necessary you just said what everyone else wants to say all the time! Tell CBS to relax and take their finger from their Butt.  Worse things racially have been said on the air and no one had to apologize. ie:  on all the award shows!  CBS sit on it and rotate  and anyone else who to offence to it!

Gottlieb is a breathe of fresh air to some of these stupid talking head sports media shows. He's smart, has opinions and can hold his own quite well. I like Gumbel, Anthony, Barkley and Kenny Smith and they're doing a good job covering the NCAA tourney but adding Gottlieb only makes it better - if he's given enough time to talk. Doug was stupid for saying something that many were probably already thinking but c'mon it's men talking sports for God sake!

Seriously? How on earth is this even a headline?  The african american commentators and athletes can talk about being black and call each other all kinds of racist names to just 'play around' with each other but as soon as a white person makes a joke that isn't even offensive it's an issue.  Thank God  Barkley to speak the truth and put some sense into it.

No big deal? The truth comes out finally ! All the BB commentators are black and they are truly racist! How sad, they are so full of themselves...

Dumb thing to say, but jesus they finally put a white guy on the show. If we can't be coaches or commentators, we won't have anything to do with the game.

@beansterFirst of all it sounds like you are racist about people getting up at 2:30pm.  I am very offended by that statement!  Secondly, I think the whiteboy was 100% accurate with his "Point of View" comment.  You get five brothers on the mike and crazy things can happen if there is not an alternative point of view!  Lastly, the media must have been pretty desperate for racial hatred to make a story out of something this minute.  Peace and Love, Bro D

@TonySpicchiali LOL..see what I mean? Just read down these comments and look at all the people making black vs white "race outrage" remarks! And none of them I have seen so far are bashing Gottlieb!

zonkeriah

@TonySpicchiali Oh brother. The people who made a big deal out of this are idiots. And if a black guy had said something similar there would be idiots on the other side making dumb gestures of outrage, too. This isn't black vs white, it is idiots vs sane people.

I feel the media is constantly putting a wedge between ALL races...  The apology, I guess was for all the do-gooders, regardless of black or white...

@morphy

Yeah, other than Ernie Johnson, Matt Winer, Rex Chapman, Seth Davis,  there aren't any white guys on the show.

Now if they could only put some white people on to cover the games.  I mean they only have Jim Nantz, Tim Brando, Bill Raftery, Verne Lundquist, Tracy Wolfson, Marv Albert, Steve Kerr, Craig Sager, Lesley Visser, Mike Giminski, etc.

But I really like how well you count.  Maybe next week you'll be able to count to "Two".
