Buffalo hires ex-Duke star Bobby Hurley

Buffalo hired Bobby Hurley as its new men’s head basketball coach on Tuesday, the school announced.

Hurley will place Reggie Witherspoon, who was not retained after going 14-20 this past season and 198-228 in his 14 seasons at the school. Hurley has his work cut out for him, as the team has never been to the NCAA tournament in its history.

The 41-year-old Hurley helped lead Duke to national championships in 1991 and 1992 was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player in 1992 and a first-team All-American in 1993.

“After reviewing a large and highly qualified national pool and following my conversations with some of the most respected figures in college athletics, Coach Hurley was clearly the choice to lead the next era of UB basketball,” UB Director of Athletics Danny White said. ” As we continue to foster our role as the flagship athletic department for the state of New York, the appointment of Coach Hurley sends a clear statement that the University at Buffalo is committed to bringing big time college athletics to the Western New York community and the state at large.”

Hurley played in the NBA from 1993-1998 before a car accident derailed his career.
