UCLA has fired basketball head coach Ben Howland, reports Yahoo! Sports.

Howland’s job status with the team was at risk when the team lost 83-63 to No. 11 seed Minnesota in the second round of the NCAA tournament Friday.

When asked about his job security after the loss, Howland didn’t have much to say.

“I have no comment. Anything in reference to any questions concerning my job status, I just want to talk about the fact that I am so proud of these kids,” he said.

Howland was 230–105 in 10 seasons at UCLA with three straight Final Foul appearances in 2006-2008. He holds a record of 398-205 in 19 seasons as a coach at Northern Arizona, Pittsburgh, and UCLA.

Howland deserves better than a firing. But he gets paid the next 4 years for sitting. Nice Job.

didn't Howland just win the Pac 12 regular season? what type of  measuring Bar is set for the next idiot coming in to UCLA?

He had the #1 haul last year that was supposed to be his saving grace.  Guess the egos didn't care to play well enough together to save his job.

Heard they'll go after Shaka.

There are coaches that deserve to be fired way more than Howland (Rick Barnes for example), but I think it is probably best for all concerned for UCLA to get someone else. HOWEVER, if that someone else is Willard from Pitt (which I have heard), then they are better served staying with Howland.

Cal's loss to Syracuse is eerily similar to UCLA's loss to Minnesota, the players just kept passing the ball in the parameter for no purpose until time runs out. What's going on with Montgomery and Howland? Can the Pac-12 recruit some coaches that can do X-O and teach the kids fundamentals (to develop talents)? If not, the top recruits will keep going to Big-10 and east coast schools. It is a touch decision by UCLA, but it is a right one.

What a waste of NCAA for Shabazz Muhammad! He should have went to Duke or UNLV.

"I don't think he's a coach that is well equipped for this "one and done" junk that college basketball has become."

He is one of the WORST proponents of the one and done recruiting system. He passes up quality players that might stay with the program for a couple of years in favor of flashy one and done recruits. He's a horrible coach, and a worse human being. In his hands the UCLA program has become an embarrassment, with felons as players. At least Wooden didn't have to see it sink this low.

He has done an incredible job of putting players into the NBA, you can almost put an all-star lineup with just Bruins, but the program has certainly gone downhill the last few years. I don't think he's a coach that is well equipped for this "one and done" junk that college basketball has become.

Should have stayed at Pitt.

@Jason23 I believe Duke backed off after the allegations of wrongdoing surfaced.

 @FireHowland

He was ALL about what was best for BEN! We found that out here in the BURGH! I guess they'll try to poach someone else from an up and coming program in hopes of returning to the "GLORY YEARS" Face it the world is different now. The kids are FKCDEU PU now with there homies, parents and recruitrers all pulling them in different directions. The schools pulling these upsets in the tournment have one thing in common, kids and some men who have played together for several years not introducing some one and dones in and messing up team chemistry. Any how BEN is financially set for life and back where he wanted to live in Cali.

@FireHowland Are you serious? Isn't Shabazz Muhammad a 'one and done?' Howland didn't seem to have a problem with him? And exactly which player is a felon? And if you think this is the lowest this program has been, you haven't been paying attention.

Howland may or may not deserve firing, but you have no idea what you're talking about.
