Costa Rica plans to file an official protest with FIFA about Friday’s 1-0 loss to the United States that was played in a snowstorm, reports Reuters.

Costa Rica has 24 hours to file a written protest.

The game was actually stopped in the 55th minute as the snow continued to fall, but ground crews cleared snow from the pitch markings and the game continued after a few minutes. Also a yellow-and-purple ball was used so the players could see what they were kicking. The game was played in front of more than 19,000 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver.

“It was an embarrassment to football, disrespectful to the game,” Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto told reporters.

U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said the referees had made the right decision to continue the game.

“Frankly, (stopping) would not have been to the advantage of either of the two teams, since they both play on Tuesday,” Gulati told reporters.

Costa Rica’s players were obviously upset after the game and disagreed about continuing the game.

“Honestly, it was robbery, a disgrace, I’ve never played a game in these conditions,” said midfielder Cristian Bolanos, who plays with Danish club FC Copenhagen.

The US has to play in Mexico City, where the home crowd routinely throws rocks, beer bottles, and dog feces at players.

I'd much rather play in a little snow.

rampantbombedrat I'd make them play ALL international games in temperate climates, so as not to unfairly advantage teams from the tropics. :)

"Honestly, it was robbery, a disgrace, I’ve never played a game in these conditions,” Were BOTH teams playing in the same conditions? Yes, they were. Put on your big-boy pants, man up, and tip your hat to the winner. Anything less is a discredit to your team and country.

UleNotknow I think most of the Latin players must be related to Danny Ainge. Lots of whining trick fall artists.

This isn't baseball.  It's football.  Play on.

FredVaughn 6 pts

The rematch in CR will be bloody. That said, my first reaction to the complaint was "Ho, sit down!"

joethemayor 5 pts

Do you play outside,  Just because you only play in ideal conditions doesn't mean you should always play that way. If you want that have all the fields inside then you can solve that problem. Thats why I like American football, no whining about the weather except for domers.

Chris8 83 pts

joethemayor Yeah I'm with you.  Maybe I just got spoiled by watching American Football, but I think that if you can't handle the weather, go home and cry about it.  Any sport played outdoors, where they have to stop it because of some rain or snow is a whimpy game.  I would only make an exception for racing, because driving at high speeds on those sort of conditions is a good way to get someone killed.

But Soccer, baseball, golf...  Man up or go home.

wootdude 42 pts

Chris8  joethemayor Did they not finish the game?

wootdude 42 pts

joethemayor Hello!  They played the game!  In the snow!  Or did you miss that?  It isn't the players complaining, it is the fans.  The players will play in whatever the conditions are at that time.  They might not like it, but they will play.  Ask any American style football player whether they would like to play in a blinding snow storm and I venture to guess that they would say no.  But they would play.  Just like the American soccer players did.

joethemayor 5 pts

wootdude  Well tell those fans to wear a coat . When I was in that beautful country of costa rica And it was unbelievable hot at 95 degrees on the coast  I jumped in the water. I don't get paid to do that but if I played a sport any condition are considered just do it.

mustwin77 5 pts

Let us all be real for 1 second. If Costa Rica was leading 1 - 0 we all know this game would have been stopped. The conditions were beyond normal for football. Playing in the cold is one thing but, to have a snowstorm on the pitch is ridiculous. I have no problem with home field advantage but, this was an embarrassment to good competition. Further, I am not saying that the U.S. had an unfair advantage playing in the snow, that is not my argument. The overall weather condition should have stopped the game period.

and if it were stopped, Costa Rica would be complaining that the refs were showing the US an unfair advantage and that they wanted to play on.  They're just mad because they didn't get the result they wanted and they can pin the blame on someone and something other than themselves.  If they had a goal slip by Guzan in the second half and the game ended in a tie, we wouldn't be hearing about any of this.

MyVoiceMyOpinion 5 pts

The ref made the decision to continue after consulting with BOTH teams.

RichLGerhold 36 pts

So if it's unfair for the US to play at home in the snow, is it unfair for the US to play in Costa Rico when it's over 100 degrees out? Easily 75% of all World Cup qualifying games as well as the World Cup itself is generally played in above average warm climates.

How many times has the US filed a protest when playing teams in central America or South America when the weather was 100% humidity as well as 100 degree plus weather?

cbcatanz 9 pts

The CR players and coaches were fine continuing to play. They didn't complain during the game. Just because they lost they start to cry. Cry more, CR, cry more.

cbcatanz 9 pts

Quick. Someone call the WAAAAAAAAmbulance.

ToddPeterson 5 pts

Agreed.  This game should have been stopped.  A cheap win for us.

cbcatanz 9 pts

By hook or by crook. A win is a win.

Kenner King 17 pts

ToddPeterson Why is it a cheap win? What advantage did one team have over the other?  If you want to talk about advantages, why not ask Mexico why all their home games are at Azteca stadium. That is a decided advantage for one team. ( And why this game was slated at altitude, btw)  What about playing in Central American nations where the fire alarm is pulled at the US team hotel ( documented 4 times in the past several years).

Sure, the snow was unique. But every single week, in the past century, a meaningful soccer game ha been played somewhere in the world where the rain makes conditions far worse than they were last night. That rain, btw, is far more dangerous for players whose ankles are far more likely to be insured severely in a deep puddle than in some deep slush.

James C 26 pts

I think you mean the Jermain Jones missed RED CARD. That was an intentional elbow to the face of an opponent, and should have been a red card.

As for the game conditions. What I saw during the stoppage was both teams arguing with the referee to continue the game.

I would love to see the referees report on this game, which should indicate what was actually said during the 55th minute stoppage.

If Costa Rica's players were in fact joining with the USA in saying the game should be continued, then the leadership of Costa Rican soccer has no argument. If they wanted the game stopped, then maybe there is an argument.

The simple fact is, both teams played in very much less than ideal conditions. The teams both played in the same conditions, so the conditions were equal for both teams.

morphy 72 pts

ToddPeterson you are no soccer fan and should be banned for your stupidity.

JonMoore 7 pts

Didnt England and Wales play in blizzard conditions last week? So are they going to complain about every game unless its between teh temp of 64-68 and clear? Get over it

Kenner King 17 pts

Of course, one would have ton wonder if the protest wold have been filed if the final score was Costa Rica 1 - US 0.

That definitely was terrible weather for a game. However, I played in identical conditions back in high school, and have played in rain that was far more blinding than that show. I have also played in 105 degree temperature, and one field that have mismatched sod from the baseball infield the previous day. The conditions sucked, but I suspect that each player on the team will have played a game in worse conditions somewhere in their career.

The bottom line is that BOTH teams played in the snow. In fact, Costa Rica did pt one in the net, in the worst conditions of the game, but the player was offside at the time. The fact of the matter is that Costa Rica was the more dangerous side in the second half.

An interesting aside. Did it not seem that each US set piece was whistled for action off the ball right at the kick, while zero of the Costa Rican goals were? The replays were quite clear that there were no fouls in most cases. If course, replays also showed that Dempsey was fouled in the box. ( And I will be fair here, and point out that he also missed the Jermain Jones yellow card, that was blatant, unnecessary and stupid.)

Whine some more, Costa Rica.  It's nowhere near as disgraceful as your crappy home pitch.  Babies.

M20 31 pts

Sorry Ricans, but that snowfield was still better than half the crap pitches in Central America

M20 Ironic and really sort of true.

knuckleballer 13 pts

And why has soccer  been slow to catch on as a spectator sport in the US? Because WE HAVE BETTER GAMES! Soccer is for kids, girls, and metrosexuals.

leehwgoc 191 pts

knuckleballer Meanwhile, baseball is even more boring to watch than soccer.  If it weren't for copious amounts of beer, people would have quit bothering to watch baseball 40 years ago.

Btw, generalizations are for idiots, the lowest-common-denominator, and the uneducated.  You, in other words.

cbcatanz 9 pts

Baseball just takes someone with an attention span greater than a 1st grader to appreciate. But you're right, a sport has to be fast pace to be enjoyable.

PaulLorenzo 7 pts

leehwgoc  knuckleballer yet here you are making your own generalization about baseball fans needed beer to enjoy the game.  I enjoy it plenty without.  It's a beautiful game that most people don't understand.  They need hard tackles, slam dunks, and other such overhyped sports spectacles to be able to enjoy a game.  Baseball is about precision, timing,  and patience.

vanboja 144 pts

Aren't you generalizing about those who make generalizations?  I think that we can do without the insults.   Actually, generalizations can be quite useful.

jack22 5 pts

leehwgoc  knuckleballer My problem with soccer is this endless nonsense about the "Beautiful Game". Yeah, if it's Brazilians who are playing it; occasionally, the Italians and the Portuguese get it right. Most all the rest, though, more closely resemble fat kids dancing the ballet.

RomarioDelLago 24 pts

knuckleballer Laughably idiotic post but that's to be expected from a baseball fan.  It's the only sport that doesn't require athletes.  LOL

RomarioDelLago  knuckleballer One, he didn't say a damn thing about baseball.  Two, get into a batting cage and try swinging at 80mph to 90mph pitches and see just how sore you can get just doing that.  Or try throwing just 30 to 40 such pitches.

I guess I wonder who thought it was a god idea to schedule an outdoor game in Denver in mid-March.  That person's judgment should be called into question here, not the referee's.

Scooterific 5 pts

TitanPBD  The game was scheduled at Denver to help acclimate the US team to altitude. Can you guess where their next game is?  And the US tends to schedule it's first home game in a cold weather site, usually Columbus and it has always worked out fine. There was nothing weird about going to Denver in March.

AlanS 5 pts

Scooterific  TitanPBD Except it is notoriously snowy in Colorado in March.  On the other hand, it could have also been 70 degrees and clear.

sld1776 7 pts

For the love of....Back when the game began to grow in the United States in the 1970's, the ENGLISH called it 'soccer'. So, naturally enough, we began calling the game 'soccer'. Shortly after, the English decided to go back to the earlier name for 'soccer'--football.As for our 'football', it originated like soccer/football, from Rugby football, where kicking the ball is far prominent than it is in our Gridirion game. No need to change a name once it is established. This is the most f*cki*ng, tiresome, stupid debate I've ever seen.

Staz 45 pts

sld1776 You're 100% right, "soccer" was a colloquial way of referring to the sport which originated at Oxford. Even if we had made it up ourselves who really cares.. we say hockey and field hockey while most Europeans say ice hockey and hockey. It doesn't matter what we call it as long as we can all understand each other.

leehwgoc 191 pts

Staz  sld1776 You know, if you think about it objectively, people getting upset with the name for a given thing being different across other cultures is as (pseudo) logical as getting upset that not everyone speaks the same language.

If Europeans and the like get upset that Americans call the sport 'soccer', then why stop there? Shouldn't they also be upset that we speak different languages in the first place?  It's the same principle.

vanboja 144 pts

Funny, we don't consider nullifying the results when we have to play in abnormally hot weather.

A1 11 pts

Good thing they weren't playing vs a Canadian team here in the frozen north - although I think that football game I actually would have paid money to see!
