Michael Vick to animal rights activists: ‘Why would you continue to bash’ me?

In his first public appearance since cancelling stops on his book tour due to death threats, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick appeared at a charity event for juvenile offenders in Atlanta and responded forcefully to the backlash against him.

“Why would you continue to bash somebody who’s trying to help make the world a better place?” he said of animal rights activists during a phone conversation with USA Today‘s Robert Klemko.

Vick signed autographs at a church in suburban Atlanta just four days after cancelling several appearances to promote his autobiography, “Finally Free.” He said that the attention the controversy drew to the book actually boosted sales and that he intends to complete an amended tour with added security measures.

“A lot of people are sick and tired of hearing about my past, because there are so many other problems that are going on in this world that need to have attention drawn to them,” Vick told USA TODAY Sports. “People are dying every day, children are being killed, going to jail. Not to say I overlook what I’ve done, but I try to do outreach as a positive.

“That’s my responsibility. That’s what I’m going to continue to do. That’s what’s important. Those people are not important.”

Despite coming off a disastrous 2012 season, Vick also said that he is preparing for 2013 with the mindset that “I’m the starter.”

The Eagles opted to restructure his contract rather than release him, agreeing to a deal in February that reduced his 2013 salary from $16 million to $7 million plus incentives.

This a sick and demented guy. When he got caught, he realized his horrific behavior could cost him a lot of money. So he and his agent went about creating this new persona. And now, we are supposed to buy into it and pretend he is not a piece of crap. As if forgiveness is automatically granted to anyone that gets caught. F him and F the Eagles.

What he did was wrong, is scary to know that there are people capable of doing what he did,and most get away with it. For me from hurting an animal is just a small step to hurting a human. We see this in history over and over again, how killers started as animals abusers, but people ignore that for some reason.  So for me there is no difference. Human or animals should never be treated the way he treated these animals. All people hurting animals or humans should pay for their actions.

I wished he would not be allowed to have another animal. I wish he would go out there teaching people how wrong dog fighting and animal cruelty is, by teaching others why is this wrong and not to get into animal cruelty of any form, teach the consequences of his actions. I wish he would do more to help the victims of his crimes, in this case dogs. I wish he would do more community work, not only giving money,  showing his face and taking responsibility for what he did,  I wish he would give some of the money he is making from his book to the victims. . Now to come and play the innocent asking why is people are hurt by my actions, is for me a sign that he is not really clear of what he has done. That is my opinion. Forgiveness he will have to earn it. Forget never!!!

@clu I respect your experiences, but not all animal activists are atheist or pagan. I have been an activist all my life and I never experienced that. But if this is your experience I respect. My experience is that we got all sorts of people, from all over the world, from different cultures and beliefs systems working together to make our world safer for animals, nature and humans too. That is a beautiful thing to experience all sorts of people working to save all kinds of life from around the world. Sad your experience was different.

He will likely be hated by the majority of Americans til the end of time. Sad point is Christians are suppose to have forgiveness. To bad the majority are only Christians when its convenient for them. Have a blessed day people.

This is an interesting subject to say the least.  Animal lover or not, Mike Vick actually did Prison time for his actions.  PRISON.  I am NOT a fan of his football or personal life.  I just wonder what people want from him.  Casey Anthony is free, walking around,  and she was exonerated for her daughters death.  Where is the justice in that?  Dahnte Stallworth Killed a HUMAN BEING with a car while drunk.  He did 30 days in jail.  Why arn't people up in arms about that?! Vick did almost 2 YEARS IN PRISON.  That is a HUGE disparity.  Most people who still hate Vick are indeed dog lovers.  I get that.  I just think at some point its healthy to move forward, and take stock in whats important.

Oh, maybe it's because what you did was so horrendous and unthinkable to any sane human being? You do not deserve our respect. You are a despicable human being that is lower than a piece of trash IMHO. You brutally slaughtered a living creature with no thought for the pain and suffering you cause. Go to hell Michael Vick, you disgusting piece of crap.

i shoot ducks. i dont slam dogs heads into the pavement... what he did was some young jeffrey dahmer stuff... really weird in how he did it. not a "average" animal abuse thing to me. any other person would be considered mentally unstable.

All I got to say is, him killing dogs is no different then those hunters creeping in the woods blowing those poor little deers heads off, shooting those poor ducks out the air, or the people thats skinning poor animals making coats out of them, animal killing is wrong period no matter what form it's in, wether it's fighting, sport i don't care, let them live......

I forgave Vick for what we did. The problem is, is he really sorry or did he just say he was to get back in the game? He didn't just kill one dog. He killed around 40. If you were sorry, wouldn't you have stopped at 1??

He should never be forgiven!  when you make statements in interviews that the only thing you regret is getting caught you obviously are not sorry for the hell you put those dogs through.  Killing several dogs with his bare hands by electrocution, drowning, and slamming dogs on to pavement over and over again and laughing about it you are an evil person that is capable of harming anything and anyone.  He even took his daughters dog and used it as a baitdog and then killed it.  he never served one day in jail for what he did to those dogs, his time was served for financing the operation. He is a waste of space and the only reason he does worn with the HSUS is because he has too as part of his probation.  A mistake is smacking the dog on the butt and realizing that was wrong to do so, what he did was cold blooded murder!!!

He's right, there are other things going on in this country, but some out there are using him to keep themselves in the media spotlight. The man did his time.  There are those who beat their wives and get less time than Mike.  Funny how we pick and choose who we want to forgive.  Thank goodness it's God's decision, not the haters of Mike Vick!

What kind of person would hear a dog screaming for it's life and keep hurting it until it was dead and laugh about it ? A mistake is kicking your dog in the ass .

@SaifRahman First of all. Vick did NOT do tile for all of him crimes. Due to a plea deal, we was never charged with animal cruelty, basically just interstate gambling. Second, there are lots of rules and rights in place to look out for humans when they get wronged/hurt/killed; there are essentially no rules or voices or rights for when animals get hurt or killed. I am that voice. And if you cannot understand that, then there's not much I can say to alter your reality..

@HussleCrowe  So let me get this straight a person who belongs to Ducks unlimited and Hunts regularly is the same as Vick....Hmmm  do your fact checking.  If the Ducks Unlimited did not exist there would not be half the Ducks out there.  Clubs like that do more to volunteer time to keep the environment in tact then anyone else.  Michael Vick Tortured animals, that is a weak argument very weak.

@JocelynLober "He", Vick, didn't kill any.  Former friends of his did, with his money, on his property, when he wasn't aware of what they were doing, and would have stopped them if he had known.

@JocelynLober if you were sorry would you have done this at all?

"As the Little Red Dog lay on the ground, fighting for air, Quanis Phillips grabbed its front legs and Michael Vick grabbed its back legs. They swung the dog over their head like a jump rope then slammed it to the ground. The first impact didn't kill it. So, Phillips and Vick slammed it again. The two men kept at it, alternating back and forth, pounding the creature against the ground until, at last, the little red dog was dead." -- from The Lost Dogs, by Jim Gorant   Bottom line: when dogs didn’t perform, he hung them, electrocuted them, held their head in a bucket of water until they drown, threw them into a pool and blocked their attempts to climb out until they grew exhausted and drowned, and literally beat them to death. Nearly every killing was slow and premeditated, AS IF HE ENJOYED IT!

NEVER HAS VICK DONE ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

@DanHagen  He did his prison sentence and is more than making up for anything else with time and money he has given both before and after the dog thing.  Let them bash him, he's doing more for the animals than any of the so-called activists.

@DanHagen I love dogs too Dan.  I think they what happened is wrong.  You are missing the point of what I am saying.  So i will ask you.  He did over 500 days in prison for crimes relating to what he did to the dogs.  What more would you like done to him for YOU to be satisfied?  I am merely asking at what point in time is his debt to society paid.  Personally, child killers like Casey Anthony are way worse, and you didn't even mention that.

Evidently you didn't see the point I was trying to make, your just picking through peoples post looking for arguments, my argument I was trying to make was killing animals period, there is no such thing of killing for sport, or hunting regularly, animals shouldn't be killed period I don't care what kind or the cause is for, thats the point I was trying to make, wether he tortured them or not doesn't matter it's all wrong, just cause the bullet is killing them instantly still doesn't mean they deserve to die like that viciously, quit looking for the negative all the time and analyze the positives

 @raidernation

Yes, the prez is black and half the country hates him.  Well he doesn't HAVE to be doing anything with his free time now.  He did his time,  The fact that he's speaks to youths, etc. shows that the guy is coming from the heart.  He could take his football checks and kick back.  But whatever he does or does not do from here on out will never be good enough for haters like you.

@DanHagen You are passionate about the cause, and that is admirable.  I love humans and animals alike.  I never said  I accepted, or approved the behavior he showed towards animals.  I just wondered at what point do we move forward. So I ask, what punishment would satisfy you Dan?

 @SaifRahman  @DanHagen

I'm not mentioning Anthony just as I'm not mentioning the hundreds of thousands of other people killed by hundreds of thousand of people. Your comparison holds no water. How can any specific discussion happen if you're going to say "yeah, but what about the children," or X never even went to jail?" One does not preclude the other, and your attempt to bring it up just gives light to a lack of argument. My point does not (or should it) include the whole world of "wrong."  My argument cuts across all issues and centers on this very simple fact: torturous killing. You can try to minimize, forgive, or generally spin it positive, slicing the blame pie any way you like, but there's no way I (and apparently a whole lot of similar-minded folks) can accept slowly TORTURING ANYONE OR ANYTHING TO DEATH. That is the worst of the worst. The magnitude of sheer premeditated torturous cruelty here; that is what sets this and Vick apartAnd to afford celebrity and some degree on ongoing admiration to this behavior? The world is upside down. Please read The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant as it's obvious you haven't

@lonerganmichael99  He's probably calling you a moron because Vick gave money to acquaintances and then didn't pay attention to what they did with that money on his property.  He wasn't out recruiting some guy to run dog fighting on his property and he certainly wasn't doing anything with the animals himself.  (He's stated more than often enough that he would have stopped it sooner if he knew.)  So, yeah, you don't know what you're talking about and accuse him of doing things he didn't do.  Hence...

Moron.

@RodMedel  Because an NFL player that is constantly doing charity work and appearances has time for actively running dog fighting and training, even during the off-season?  Yeah, sure.

Huh! Have you been reading my comments, you...ugh.  Listen, I know about racism, as all ethnic groups do. I played minor league ball for Atlanta in the early 80's, and one of the worst experiences I had was in the Appy league as the only African-American player in a hillbilly league for the Pulaski Braves ('82).  I don't condemn all whites, because there is good and evil in all groups. I'm defensive of Obama because I have never heard so many racists rants in my life as I did when he was first elected. And they WEREN'T all political, that 's a cop-out used by many.  From what I heard, you would have thought the man did something illegal just by even running!  But back to Vick, I think parents use athletes as role models way too much.  I'm of the Barkley school of thought: the real role models are at HOME!  Parents like make us believe athletes don't have a choice in the matter, but the truth is, if parents do their jobs at home, kids wouldn't be so wrapped up in athletes as role model.  Peace to you all.

@mjh0815  Because if David Stern Or Roger Goodell, before taking over their position, announced free hot dogs, popcorn, and beer at every game for all fans, then realized that it would take longer than expected to set up the logistics for that or realized it would cost to much, you'd still be bitching about breaking a promise?  If you promise something you're not capable of, no amount of someone else complaining will make you capable of it through some magical force.

@JocelynLober  @GaryHall  @raidernation I am educated and I do hate the President, But I do hate his politics.  He was not ready for this job and I do not have time to let him learn on the job.  He is spending money like a drunken sailor.   Oh and he has not closed Gitmo or got out of Iraq or ended the war in Afghanistan, all of the things that he promised.

As for your avatar the largest mass killing in the world happened in Oslo and it is illegal to own automatic weapons.  If people want to kill they will no matter how many laws we pass.  This world has a mental health issue not a gun issue.

mjh0815
mjh0815

@GaryHall  @raidernation I do not like the President because he is condescending. but back to the statement you made I do not think it was a black or white statement, I believe that it was a point  you were trying to make about how people will not let this go.  He is and was a role model in the black community.  At first it was a bad role model now it is a good one that shows the black community what you can do with your life after you F$%* up big time.
