Michael Vick to animal rights activists: ‘Why would you continue to bash’ me?

In his first public appearance since cancelling stops on his book tour due to death threats, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick appeared at a charity event for juvenile offenders in Atlanta and responded forcefully to the backlash against him.
“Why would you continue to bash somebody who’s trying to help make the world a better place?” he said of animal rights activists during a phone conversation with USA Today‘s Robert Klemko.
Vick signed autographs at a church in suburban Atlanta just four days after cancelling several appearances to promote his autobiography, “Finally Free.” He said that the attention the controversy drew to the book actually boosted sales and that he intends to complete an amended tour with added security measures.
“A lot of people are sick and tired of hearing about my past, because there are so many other problems that are going on in this world that need to have attention drawn to them,” Vick told USA TODAY Sports. “People are dying every day, children are being killed, going to jail. Not to say I overlook what I’ve done, but I try to do outreach as a positive.
“That’s my responsibility. That’s what I’m going to continue to do. That’s what’s important. Those people are not important.”
Despite coming off a disastrous 2012 season, Vick also said that he is preparing for 2013 with the mindset that “I’m the starter.”
The Eagles opted to restructure his contract rather than release him, agreeing to a deal in February that reduced his 2013 salary from $16 million to $7 million plus incentives.

This a sick and demented guy. When he got caught, he realized his horrific behavior could cost him a lot of money. So he and his agent went about creating this new persona. And now, we are supposed to buy into it and pretend he is not a piece of crap. As if forgiveness is automatically granted to anyone that gets caught. F him and F the Eagles.

LikeWhat he did was wrong, is scary to know that there are people capable of doing what he did,and most get away with it. For me from hurting an animal is just a small step to hurting a human. We see this in history over and over again, how killers started as animals abusers, but people ignore that for some reason. So for me there is no difference. Human or animals should never be treated the way he treated these animals. All people hurting animals or humans should pay for their actions.
I wished he would not be allowed to have another animal. I wish he would go out there teaching people how wrong dog fighting and animal cruelty is, by teaching others why is this wrong and not to get into animal cruelty of any form, teach the consequences of his actions. I wish he would do more to help the victims of his crimes, in this case dogs. I wish he would do more community work, not only giving money, showing his face and taking responsibility for what he did, I wish he would give some of the money he is making from his book to the victims. . Now to come and play the innocent asking why is people are hurt by my actions, is for me a sign that he is not really clear of what he has done. That is my opinion. Forgiveness he will have to earn it. Forget never!!!
@clu I respect your experiences, but not all animal activists are atheist or pagan. I have been an activist all my life and I never experienced that. But if this is your experience I respect. My experience is that we got all sorts of people, from all over the world, from different cultures and beliefs systems working together to make our world safer for animals, nature and humans too. That is a beautiful thing to experience all sorts of people working to save all kinds of life from around the world. Sad your experience was different.

LikeThis is an interesting subject to say the least. Animal lover or not, Mike Vick actually did Prison time for his actions. PRISON. I am NOT a fan of his football or personal life. I just wonder what people want from him. Casey Anthony is free, walking around, and she was exonerated for her daughters death. Where is the justice in that? Dahnte Stallworth Killed a HUMAN BEING with a car while drunk. He did 30 days in jail. Why arn't people up in arms about that?! Vick did almost 2 YEARS IN PRISON. That is a HUGE disparity. Most people who still hate Vick are indeed dog lovers. I get that. I just think at some point its healthy to move forward, and take stock in whats important.

LikeSaifRahman First of all. Vick did NOT do tile for all of him crimes. Due to a plea deal, we was never charged with animal cruelty, basically just interstate gambling. Second, there are lots of rules and rights in place to look out for humans when they get wronged/hurt/killed; there are essentially no rules or voices or rights for when animals get hurt or killed. I am that voice. And if you cannot understand that, then there's not much I can say to alter your reality..

LikeDanHagen I love dogs too Dan. I think they what happened is wrong. You are missing the point of what I am saying. So i will ask you. He did over 500 days in prison for crimes relating to what he did to the dogs. What more would you like done to him for YOU to be satisfied? I am merely asking at what point in time is his debt to society paid. Personally, child killers like Casey Anthony are way worse, and you didn't even mention that.

I'm not mentioning Anthony just as I'm not mentioning the hundreds of thousands of other people killed by hundreds of thousand of people. Your comparison holds no water. How can any specific discussion happen if you're going to say "yeah, but what about the children," or X never even went to jail?" One does not preclude the other, and your attempt to bring it up just gives light to a lack of argument. My point does not (or should it) include the whole world of "wrong." My argument cuts across all issues and centers on this very simple fact: torturous killing. You can try to minimize, forgive, or generally spin it positive, slicing the blame pie any way you like, but there's no way I (and apparently a whole lot of similar-minded folks) can accept slowly TORTURING ANYONE OR ANYTHING TO DEATH. That is the worst of the worst. The magnitude of sheer premeditated torturous cruelty here; that is what sets this and Vick apartAnd to afford celebrity and some degree on ongoing admiration to this behavior? The world is upside down. Please read The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant as it's obvious you haven't

(He's stated more than often enough that he would have stopped it sooner if he knew.) So, yeah, you don't know what you're talking about and accuse him of doing things he didn't do. Hence...

"As the Little Red Dog lay on the ground, fighting for air, Quanis Phillips grabbed its front legs and Michael Vick grabbed its back legs. They swung the dog over their head like a jump rope then slammed it to the ground. The first impact didn't kill it. So, Phillips and Vick slammed it again. The two men kept at it, alternating back and forth, pounding the creature against the ground until, at last, the little red dog was dead." -- from The Lost Dogs, by Jim Gorant Bottom line: when dogs didn’t perform, he hung them, electrocuted them, held their head in a bucket of water until they drown, threw them into a pool and blocked their attempts to climb out until they grew exhausted and drowned, and literally beat them to death. Killing several dogs with his bare hands by electrocution, drowning, and slamming dogs on to pavement over and over again and laughing about it you are an evil person that is capable of harming anything and anyone. He even took his daughters dog and used it as a baitdog and then killed it. he never served one day in jail for what he did to those dogs, his time was served for financing the operation. He is a waste of space and the only reason he does worn with the HSUS is because he has too as part of his probation. A mistake is smacking the dog on the butt and realizing that was wrong to do so, what he did was cold blooded murder!!!

Huh! Have you been reading my comments, you...ugh. Listen, I know about racism, as all ethnic groups do. I played minor league ball for Atlanta in the early 80's, and one of the worst experiences I had was in the Appy league as the only African-American player in a hillbilly league for the Pulaski Braves ('82). I don't condemn all whites, because there is good and evil in all groups. I'm defensive of Obama because I have never heard so many racists rants in my life as I did when he was first elected. And they WEREN'T all political, that 's a cop-out used by many. From what I heard, you would have thought the man did something illegal just by even running! But back to Vick, I think parents use athletes as role models way too much. I'm of the Barkley school of thought: the real role models are at HOME! Parents like make us believe athletes don't have a choice in the matter, but the truth is, if parents do their jobs at home, kids wouldn't be so wrapped up in athletes as role model. Peace to you all.
