Former World Series of Poker winner busted in prostitution sting

Uncategorized

A former winner of the World Series of Poker was arrested in a male prostitution sting at a North Carolina hotel earlier this week, reports WTVD, a Raleigh-Durham, N.C. television station.

A Wake Forest Police Department spokesperson said Greg Raymer was one of six men who went to the hotel when they responded to an advertisement posted by undercover police on a website often used by prostitutes.

Raymer, 48, who is nicknamed “Fossilman” and known for wearing lizard-eye hologram glasses during poker events, won the 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event.

“The locations prostitutes choose for this type of criminal activity vary and seldom remain the same for more than a couple of days at a time, which makes enforcement difficult,” Police Chief Jeffrey Leonard said in a statement. “In this instance, we conducted the operation at a local hotel with its full cooperation. We are not aware of this type of criminal activity ever occurring at the hotel. Our officers selected the hotel for the undercover operation at random.”

Bond for the men was set at $1,000 and they due to appear in court on April 18.

When I saw the headline, the names of past WSOP winners raced through my mind, and I had a few "suspects" right away. I admit that Greg Raymer was the last person I would think of. I loved his play during his run to the championship, and loved his post-match commentaries even more. I admired the way he kept his cool when one of the losing finalists was overheard by the mic insulting Raymer with vile obscenity. I saw him celebrate with his wife whom he seemed to love deeply, despite the fact that (or because?) she was also overweight. I guess this humanizes him a little more.  Still, say it ain't so?

There goes the chance for this "sport" to gain a nod for inclusion in the Summer Games.

Why hasn't prostitution been DE-Criminalized yet?   Prostitution has been around since GOD gave man the urge to plant his seed - an urge that doesn't begin and end during a marriage.   To punish a man for trying to relieve the urge in a reasonably clean, safe and responsible way is as stupid and arrogant as any group or government can be.    If they disagree with GOD's design of man then they should take it up with HIM, not punish mere humans for the act of being human.

Hitler had an uncommon idea about a way for ending prostitution in any society.  It's quoted in the book _The Army Didn't Issue You a Wife__.

His nickname sucks.  Why would he think those glasses are cool?  I bet he was wearing them when the cops got him.  He wouldn't see those working boys to see any of his tells.

He'a a poke-r champ!    Why don't the cops go catch some real criminals?  This is an outrage.

So, are they conducting similar stings for straight guys? In either case, the crime is being committed by the cops, who advertise a service for a fee. What a waste of taxpayers' money.

If both seller and buy are adults that agree to sex for money, what is the crime?  Don't preach to me about sex slave trade...that is a crime, so prosecute it.  If a minor, prosecute it.  This is about men wanting to pay someone for sex.  If no harm, why a crime?  Stay out of people's bedrooms police!  Big brother again.

This article hits close to home and heart. my daughter was murdered by 4 males  1 was a adult who wanted to turn her into a sex slave when she declined they shot her. Before you past judgement on dad please know I tried desperately to save my daughter. These preditors threatened the family and she reacted met them .

Some of you fellas are missing the point. Adults getting together of their own free will in the sack is fine, whether or not money changes hands. What's not fine is women being compelled to get in sacks with adults as sex slaves. The prostitution industry has a lot of that, in case you haven't been paying any attention to the real world. Are you in favor of sex slavery, and are you able to guarantee that the sex object offered for the accommodation of your d**k is a willing female who keeps the fee you presumably pay her?

For all you "prostitution isn't hurting anyone" folks out there. Human trafficking is a huge problem across the world. At timse the police force cannot go after the sex traders (supply chains) because they move, so they go after the john's (demand). Hopefully this will deter the demand for sex slaves a little because if it was your daughter kidnapped into this, you would think all these guys should be castrated (not just given a $1000 fine).

Why don't they put in the article exactly how much more damage has been done and how many more dangerous situation have the police been called out to deal with regarding guys meeting a hooker / call girl at either her place, his place or a hotel.

Let's really find out what arrests like this are saving the world from ... anybody .. bueler ... bueler. Two adults agree to meet for sex and you ruin a guys life over it... Law Enforcement at  its worst .. nice job Barney Phife! Not to mention I'm sure you tip toed all around the law but you and I both know what it is .. it's entrapment. You lie about what he will get .. you lie about what the imposter looks like ... lets face it you lie .. cops lie much more then we will ever know because for them and the prosecutors its about winning their case 100% of the time not seeing justice done 100% of the time!!

True story in MA one of the worst POS stings ever. They have the girl pose on line in a chat room as someone who has just gone through a tough time wants company .. hat leads to sex talk and then the imposter says she'd really show him a good time if he can get his hand on some pot .. he says he'll ge some she says well see if you can get XX amount because her gu is not around .... the guy shows up they arest him on the prostitution sting .. they made sure he brought enough pot with him to be charged with didtribution and they picked a hotel that was withing 1000 yards of an elementary scholl so dealing by a school was also charged!!!  The guy was a good parent who had gotten divorced he was a long time coach o endless sports teams his kids were on and they ruined the guy!! I get so pissed off recaling the travesty.

Probable cause has left the building our law enforcement, court and prison system is a giant sloth just taking and taking and ruining the lives of too many decent people who get caught up in our corrupt and unfair legal sytem.

Take all the prostitution laws nationally and DUMP em! What a waste of tax payer dollars in the STUPID quest to quell the worlds oldest profession. Having consensual sex for money isn't criminal as long as both parties are 18 years old. THAT IS what the law should be, protect minors and not jail adult men & women. STUPID law makers and LAW ENFORCEMENT has BETTER things to focus on. The VICE squad should be working cold case homicides and street gang violence.

Poorly worded article which is intentionally misleading for clicks - i.e. money.

Six men lured by a female officer posing as a prostitute is different from "male prostitution".

Great police work, you managed to get 6 horny guys off the street at the tax payers expense. The exact same could have been accomplished by an actual hooker at no cost to the community. Oh you righty's always making government just small enough to fit through the key hole of a bedroom door. It's just like America but only with a heavy dose of facism.

The only way a guy as ugly as Raymer is going to get a woman is to pay her.

this sting was not for male prostitution, the original article states men looking for female prostitutes. SI, yo should of just copied the article, instead of adding more insult to injury for this guy.

Don' think many guys are going to sit down at a table with this buttdart any longer. Are you going to shake hands with a guy who has had his hand up a male prostitutes bung hole pulling out his turds? Good luck with the rest of your career which is now over there...Greggy

@CityTrucker the vast majority of these types of stings are for straight guys. And they wouldn't have mentioned a fee in the ad, because that would be entrapment. Haven't you ever watched COPS?

@a1exjet THEY made sure he brought enough pot to be charged with distribution? Oh what a tragedy...  Did they hand him the pot too? Please. It's not difficult to keep from being arrested. You just have to not be a dumbass or a scumbag, or both.  Obviously "the guy" doesn't qualify on at least one of the above.  A good parent who was a longtime coach? Hooray. Let's give "the guy" a medal of valor.  REAL decent people know how to stay out of jail. Again, it's not difficult.  But I guess you also have to be halfway intelligent too...
