Financial terms were not announced. The signing of kick returner Leon Washington by the Patriots earlier in the week signaled the possible end of Woodhead’s tenure with the team.
Woodhead, 28, had 76 carries for 301 yards and four touchdowns and caught 40 passes for 446 yards and three scores last season with the New England Patriots. The five-year veteran also played with the New York Jets before signing with the Patriots before the 2010 season.
“We are really excited to add Danny to our football team,” Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said. “Not only does he add a different dynamic to our offense, but he has all the intangible qualities that we are looking for in the players who we want to become San Diego Chargers. Danny is smart, he’s tough and he has a passion for the game. We feel his versatility and playmaking ability will be an upgrade for our offense.”
In three seasons with the Patriots, Woodhead rushed for 1,199 yards and 10 touchdowns and also had 982 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.
