The New York Giants are trying to re-sign free-agent tight end Martellus Bennett before the free-agent signing period starts Tuesday, reports the New York Daily News.

Bennett, the former Dallas Cowboy backup, had a breakout season in 2012, catching a career-high 55 passes for 626 yards and five touchdowns. The report says that the Giants and Bennett’s representatives have talked over the past few days trying to hammer out a deal.

“I am and will continue communicating with the Giants,” Bennett’s agent, Kennard McGuire said to the Daily News. “Martellus is still in New York, and we are taking it one day at a time.”

Bennett signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Giants last offseason when there was little interest league-wide in Bennett.
