The New York Jets have asked wide receiver Santonio Holmes to restructure his contract so the team can clear some salary cap space to go after free agents, reports ESPN.com.

Holmes is set to make $11 million next season and is guaranteed up to $7.5 million regardless of if has a roster spot or not. The team would pick up the remaining balance of up to the $7.5 million if he signs with another team.

Holmes, 29, missed the majority of the 2012 season with a Lisfranc injury to his left foot and is due $8.25 million in 2014, with $1 million roster bonus due next March and $6.5 million in 2015 as part of a five-year, $45.25 million contract he signed in 2011.
