The St. Louis Cardinals announced Thursday morning that shortstop Rafael Furcal will undergo Tommy John surgery. According to a report from MLB.com, the recovery time will be six to eight months, so the NL All-Star will likely be out for the season.
Furcal, 35, had initially injured his right elbow in August and was hopeful that with a little rest, the ulnar collateral ligament would have time to heal. But an MRI revealed inflammation around the ligament last week and he was forced to stop all baseball activities in order to meet with doctors to discuss his options.
Prior to the injury, Furcal batted .264 last season, stealing 12 bases in 121 games for the Cardinals. It is expected that Pete Kozma and Ronny Cedeno will step up in his absence.

And somewhere, Ryan Theriot's phone is ringing...

LikePlease go find a killer SS. Don't leave this to platooning or some cross-your-fingers approach. The Cards are still solid contenders, and they need solid veteran leadership. With second base already a lottery, why leave the middle infield looking like a glorified, high paid, little league team?
