Free agent tackle to-be Jake Long is looking for a contract that will pay him $11 million annually, a number that would make him among the highest-paid players at his position.

Citing a team familiar with Long’s asking price, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported the figure on Sunday. That would be an increase from late January, when reports put Long’s demands around $10 million per season.

Until recently, Long was thought to be one of the best left tackles in the game. But at only 27, Long has seen multiple injuries that have led to a rather stark decline over the past two seasons. The Dolphins placed him on injured reserve in December after he tore his left triceps. It remains uncertain as to whether he will remain at left tackle in the long-term.

The Dolphins drafted tackle Jonathan Martin in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played most of this season as the team’s right tackle, but he was a left tackle at Stanford.

I would personally like to see the Lions go after Long. They need additional quality on the OL, and Long is a Michigan guy (from about 90 minutes north of Detroit).

Would 11 million be too much for him? Yes. I think given his injuries he is a 8-10 mill per season player, but if a contract could be structured to give him the opportunity to make more should be prove reliable and helathy, the Lions should do it.

That would allow them to make some moves on the OL to get rid of some of the dead weight they have on the line.

Next time ol Jake should warm up that tricep with something other than a tribal tattoo. 10 years too late bro.

Wow, that is one expensive revolving door.

ian - look up the salaries of Jason Peters, Joe Thomas, Trent Williams and D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

All have 8 figure contracts.  In the next few seasons, there will clearly be more.  Also, watch "The Blind Side".  LTs are among the highest paid on a team.  World mad?  Maybe, but LTs (good LTs) are well paid.

@M as in Mancy  I think he has had that thing for the last 9-10 years. From what I recall that was on him while at Michigan, but I could be wrong.

@dt What is out of hand?   It is basic economics.  Supply and demand.

@JoeCabot @dt $11 million/year can cover the rest of his body with terrible tattoos.

@mefoster86 correct. Long has injury issues, but $11Mill per year is no longer "gone mad", it's just expensive.

@John4  @mefoster86 It's gone mad in my books. It's the type of thing that causes work stoppages during CBA's. I'm not arguing about market conditions. I'm saying it's ridiculous to be paying a tackle 8 figures. You can have your own opinion about that. I'll keep mine.
