After a quiet season that saw him play a minimal role in the team’s offense, the San Francisco 49ers do not plan to re-sign wide receiver Randy Moss, according to ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio.

Moss came out of a season-long retirement to sign a surprising one-year, $2.5-million deal with the Niners last offseason. At 35 years old, he finished the season with 28 catches for 434 yards and three touchdowns, posting seven receptions for 112 yards during the team’s run to the Super Bowl.

It was a rare drama-free season for the enigmatic star, who served as a veteran mentor to San Francisco’s young receivers. He made few headlines until Super Bowl Media Day, when he declared himself “the greatest receiver ever to play.”

But according to Florio, “it’s safe to assume” he privately complained about his reduced role to the 49ers, and the team made it clear at the scouting combine last week that it did not want to bring Moss back.

After 14 NFL seasons, the former Vikings first-round pick ranks ninth in league history in career receptions (982), third in career receiving yards (15,292) and second in career receiving touchdowns (156).

Gee I'm broken hearted. I think I'll go to church and pray for Randy.

I'm sure the Chiefs will be glad to give Smith a familiar target...

Don't know if this story is true, but if it is.....no ring for Mr. "I am the greatest receiver"....lol. Maybe Moss can have a reality show with T.O. and Chad Johnson named "Damn, I wish I had a championship!"

Bejezus...who the hell uses Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com as a source for anything? The man only cites ' league sources ' for his daily rumors. Oh I see...this Tracking Blog is not attributed to a named writer, so this is non-story probably written by some high school intern who Googles for leads.
