The San Francisco 49ers will trade Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, reports Jay Glazer on Twitter.

The San Jose Mercury News‘ Tim Kawakami reports San Francisco will receive Kansas City’s second-round pick this year (34th overall) and “a similar pick” in 2014. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the 2014 pick will be a “conditional mid-round” selection.

Smith was having the best season of his career before an injury knocked him out of the lineup in November. Colin Kaepernick took over and led San Francisco to the Super Bowl. With a weak draft class and few other potential starters available, Smith was one of the top targets for teams looking to upgrade at quarterback.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday that the 49ers had a deal for Smith “effectively completed.” But the other team was not known at the time.

Most of the speculation pointed to the Chiefs, who struggled at quarterback last season. Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn split the job and combined to throw 20 interceptions and only eight touchdowns. The Chiefs hired former Eagles coach Andy Reid in the offseason, and improving at quarterback was expected to be among his top priorities.

Kansas City owns the top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, normally a spot where teams find a quarterback. But this year’s class — headlined by prospects like West Virginia’s Geno Smith and USC’s Matt Barkley — lacks a clear answer at the position so early in the first round.

Smith provides a solid, experienced solution for the Chiefs. He has started 75 games in his career and led San Francisco to the NFC Championship in 2012. In nine starts last season, Smith completed 70.2 percent of his passes and threw 13 touchdowns. The game before his injury, on Monday Night Football against Arizona, he completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns.

We had predicted this a few months ago.  We knew that Alex Smith would be traded as he is a starter and not someone you want to sit on a bench.  We also knew that with all the woes that Kansas City has had, he would go there.  Now with the #1 pick, the Chiefs should be able to fill in a hole that needs plugged.  They have a lot of talent on the team and just need a leader - they got that leder in Smith.

Really happy for Alex. He gave us some great moments. I think this whole thing was a win/win for Harbaugh and the team. We got to go to the Superbowl, and Alex gets to start, with a team that really wants him. Plus, getting a 2nd round pick and another is more than a lot of expected we would get. Go Alex. Go Niners.

@JamieBreslow Its a good trade for the '9ers, and at 34, that's almost a first round pick.  Only concern for you guys has to be whether Kaepernick can continue to play on that level.

I'd guess they will be getting several future picks for this trade, but not the first rounder
