New England Patriots running back Jeff Demps told the team that he plans to return to his career running track and field events, leaving his status with the team unknown, reports NFL.com.

Demps has a race scheduled in March and the track season runs through August, the time which teams are already in training camp. Demps did not play last season because the team put him on injured reserve before the first game.

Demps was a member of the 4×100-meter relay team that finished second to Jamaica in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He signed a three-year, $1.451 million contract with the Patriots last August and has already received the $211,000 that was guaranteed in the deal.

“Jeff has no intention of leaving football. He just loves track and wants to do both,” Demps’ agent Daniel Rose said.

Demps, while attending the University of Florida in 2010, won the 60-meter NCAA indoor title and 100-meter NCAA outdoor title.

Brilliant decision Demps!!! Last year you weren't in football shape (just track shape) and got injured on the first play in preseason. Let's do that again! Besides, the Pats offense isn't really that complicated. I'm sure you can miss time running track then fit right in....just like Ocho did!!! Apparently these Florida boys aren't very bright.

@Mr_B Shut up you dumb Pats fan. The Pats haven't won a Super Bowl since they got caught cheating using videotapes.
