Looking for additional salary-cap flexibility, the New York Jets will try to restructure wide receiver Santonio Holmes’ contract this offseason,’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday.

Even after a mass-release of veterans Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Jason Smith got the Jets under the projected 2013 salary cap, the team still needs additional room to make roster moves. Team sources told Schefter that the team will look to Holmes, who is set to make $11.25 million — including $7.5 million guaranteed — next season.

Schefter reported that the Jets are currently about $5.7 million under the 2013 salary cap. The cuts of the four veterans opened up $30.7 million in cap room.

Holmes is recovering from a serious foot injury that forced him to miss the final 12 games of last season. In December, Holmes told ESPNNewYork that he needed to undergo another surgery this offseason to remove plates from his foot, but he should be ready for the start of the season.

In 2009, Holmes’ final season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he had a career-high 79 receptions and 1,248 yards — totals he hasn’t been able to match with the Jets. He caught 20 balls in four games last season, including one for a touchdown.

i agree. there has been too much drama surrounding this team. ryan has hidden behind the tebow disaster's publicity where he is responsible as head coach for the teams self destruction. 2 years ag fans were hoping for super bowl now they get to watch mcilroy and garrard battle out for new york city's second teams qb. this is worse than when pisarcik was giants qb years ago

Get rid of Buudy Ryans son and this would be a good team
