Alex Smith trade ‘effectively complete,’ according to report

The San Francisco 49ers have “effectively completed” a trade involving quarterback Alex Smith, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday.
La Canfora reported that the 49ers have told inquiring teams that they have completed a trade, but it cannot be finalized until the league year officially begins on March 12.
The other team involved in the trade wasn’t immediately clear. La Canfora speculated that the teams that make the most sense would be the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars. Yahoo Sports’ Jason Cole reported Saturday that the Chiefs were among the most active pursuers of Smith.

so it’s not official, both clubs view it at as it’s effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Smith was in the midst of the best season of his career before suffering a concussion on Nov. 11. Up to that point, he had a 104.1 passer rating and had guided the 49ers to a 6-2 record. But Colin Kaepernick dazzled the next week against Chicago, and head coach Jim Harbaugh made the decision to stick with Kaepernick thereafter.

Smith is better than anything KC has on their roster at QB, but that still doesn't mean he will turn them into winners. And this year's draft class for QB does not look promising. So, unfortunately for KC, they have the top pick in a draft that has no consensus top pick and where pick 5 could be as good as pick 1. Therefore, the pick has minimal to no trade value. Wow, rough year to suck.

LikeSmith is the best QB, presently available, due to a questionable draft class. I would have no problem with my Chiefs taking him, as long as they still address the QB position in a later round and don't totally ignore it in the draft. I just don't see allot of difference between the top 4or 5 QB's, in this year's draft and I think all of them will need a year or two before starting. This is a bad year for a QB needy team to have the number 1 overall pick. I think the Chiefs should focus on both the offensive and defensive line, with their first pick and generally just draft the old 'best player available.' Smith can lead them to the playoffs. He's displayed that much in S.F. If the Chiefs can protect him, surround him with enough weapons and continue to utilize their strength, the running game, enough to open up play action and the passing game, i think they have a pretty good core group of young players to build around and don't lack many pieces, to be a legitimate playoff contender there is more talent on the team than their record indicates. Having a HC and a GM, on the same page, should make allot of difference with the team.

LikeWho is getting stuck with him? Uh, I meant who has traded for a mid level "never was"? And much more importantly, why would be matter to his new team? If he's going to a sub .500 team, then they will continue to be sub .500. He's a game manage at best, and does not improve a lousy team.

LikeGreat information. Lacanfora says a deal is done but he hasn't a clue what team or what the compensation is. Tell us when you actually have solid info.

LikeThe reporter says both teams regard it as a done deal even though he admits not knowing "the other team." What a crock. Who pays guys to write such nonsense?
