The New York Jets fire sale that saw them cut five players and save over $30 million in salary cap space this week is not over.

The team will attempt to trade backup quarterback Tim Tebow during the NFL Scouting Combine this weekend, reports ESPN.com. The Jets are approximately $5.7 million under the cap.

The Jets can not officially trade Tebow until March 12 and hopes some team will make a deal for the third-year quarterback. If they are unable to deal him, the team will most likely release him, the report says. Tebow is scheduled to earn $2.5 million next season.

The team traded for Tebow last offseason but didn’t get much from him on the field. Tebow completed six of eight passes for 39 yards and ran 32 times for 102 yards.

He cant hit a long target, he airs it out and prays, which is whole nother thread, Most of us sure were glad when he left Denver, He simply didn't fit, One has to trust Elway with his QB moves, he has sure done Ok so far

I will give you a half eaten ham sandwich and all the coins in my right pocket. Deal?

 @6marK6 I think you're getting robbed if you have to give up the sammich AND coins.  If that's what you agree to, make sure you're getting royalties off any book deals he writes for Christian press.

How do you sell a player to other teams when you declare a release if the player is not picked up?  Any team that wants Tim would obviously wait and pick him up after his release for nothing.  What great salesmanship [<sarcasm]

pandah462
pandah462

 @BradH1 They obviously want to get rid of him regardless of circumstances.  You're funny.  [also sarcasm}

Tim is a running quarterback like no other in the NFL.  He has gotten a really raw deal after bringing the Broncos from last to first.  In fact Denver had two traditional quarterbacks and lost, lost lost, until Tebow came along and got nothing but crap from Elway, who didn't play as well as Tebow in his 2nd year. Green with Jealousy?  Maybe.  Bad Judgment to not keep Tim to learn from Peyton? Certainly.

pandah462

 @BradH1 "Certainly."  You think that, without question, it was foolish for them to give up a FB understudy and pick up Brock Osweiler as heir apparent?  I think the bad judgment here is yours.

 @BradH1 Your kidding right??? I guess the fact that the Oline got their act together by the time Tebow came in after not protecting the other QBs or the fact the defense stood strong giving hardly any points up. or the fact Tebows QB numbers were beyond horrible and he basically just ran as he couldnt throw to save his life. To keep a so called QB in the NFL who can not throw the ball is just stupid. Then you have the chance to pick up one of the greatest QBs of all time while maybe drafting a new one to learn from him lands in your lap your an idiot to not pull the trigger. You gave up what essentially was a 2nd string TE standing in the qb position for one of the greatests of all time. You may want to learn a little about football as you obviously do not watch the game.

 @JoeHercik Joe I watched Tebow Throw the winning touchdown pass in NFL record time to beat the Pittsburg Steelers in Tebows First Playoff Game.  I saw Tebow do what Kyle Orton couldn't do with the exact same team.  I saw Tebow throw with no interceptions while playing for the jets for 102 yards.  I saw him take the Broncos from last to first.  YOU show me a list of NFL quarterbacks who have done that?  You may not know that Tim Tebow has dyslexia.  People with Dyslexia have a way of focusing that other people don't have.  My point was that in sales the sales person doesn't trash his/her product and then try to sell or in this case announce they will release Tebow instead of playing him and expect other teams to want to pay the Jets anything when they can wait and pick him up on waivers after his release.  Apparently you didn't watch the mess in Arizona with their awful quarterbacks that are supposed to be the type of NFL quality, or the Browns QB mess or even the JETS as Sanchez had a meltdown.  In fact the Cardinals almost beat the JETS.  Remember that score?  7-6 with the Cardinals only kicking two field goals? and Sanchez being intercepted several times?  Tebow wasn't intercepted at all.  So what I expect to happen is that which ever NFL team picks him up as a backup, will have to put him in after their OL lets their non-running QB get injured, TEBOW comes in and wins.  Then TEBOW plays the JETS and BEATS them to a pulp.

   I think he is very motivated and he works hard.  Something Sanchez wasn't doing as he fiddled with his girlfriend when he was supposed to be concentrating.  Did you think Sanchez was doing an acceptable job?  His interceptions exceeded his touchdown totals.   How is TEBOW worse than that?  The ONLY reason TEBOW didn't go in for Sanchez is that if he won a game RYAN would look like an idiot for not playing him before so Ryan didn't want  TEBOW to succeed.  That is a coaching character flaw that is going to get Ryan fired at the end of the 2013 season.

of those 102 yards Tim ran about 21 yards to the 1 yard line but Ryan wouldn't let him carry it over the goal to get a running touchdown.  So Ryan sent in Green to run in the 1 yard.  Very classy to take the TD away from Tim.  I noticed Tim looked depressed after that.  I often read that Quarterbacks, like Alex Smith, have easily bruised Egos.  Tim Tebow played very well and had no interceptions when he threw the ball.  Sanchez had games in 2012 where he threw more interceptions than TDs.  So what is he practices badly.  He plays well during a game.  I want to see Tim go to a team where he plays then has the Jets as an opponent and beats the pants off of them. I think he is very motivated.  I wonder if the raiders or Cardinals are ready to win ugly or not.

bad teams know that all losses are ugly.

Tebow's wins with the Broncos were all ugly.

if i were an NFL owner, i'll take those ugly wins every week and i'll be a happy camper :-)

all tebow needs is a chance to score those ugly wins.

I can't believe you omitted Kurt Warner from your gallery of quarterbacks that started over.  He is the only NFL quarterback to ever take two different teams to the Super Bowl and win one. In all three games, he had his team in the lead with about 2 min. or less to go in the game. If the defense had held the other team, he would have won all three games.

The Jets are going nowhere with Sanchez, toejam ryan, and that huge payroll.

Tebow is the least of their problems.

 @Dana2 Per Timbow, they're probably going somewhere, and that somewhere is hell.

Why trade for him when you know you could sign him (if you actually wanted to) off the street in a couple weeks?? Jets Management are a bunch of idiots.

Jets not only hurt themselves by not using him to get wins, they didn't show what he can do with a bad team so they aren't helping his value. Hopefully some coach and team will see what a value he is to an organization both on and off the field. Remember Kurt Warner? no one wanted him, Rmember Tom Brady? where did he get taken in the draft? Doug Flutie? There will be a team that will see there is a football player here willing to work hard and help win games

 @TerryFletcher-Borden Hey Terry - Sorry but guys like Warner and Brady at least showed they could throw the ball. At this point in Tebows career, he shouldn't need to be coached up to throw a consistent spiral with a rumor of accuracy. He has been playing QB since his day at Florida and if he hasn't mastered AT LEAST throwing the ball yet, maybe he does need a reality check and a career change.

 @Jim21  @TerryFletcher-Borden Steve Young was a running quarterback who could not throw either, until he spent all his time carrying the clip board and learning from Walsh and Montana.  Now statistically he is the greatest passer of all time.  Tebow WAS drafted as a first round pick, so there must be a reason for that, and I am sure it is not about marketing value.  There are only bad coaches and bad management that create bad players, never the other way around.  Jarmacus Russell would have been a totally different player if the Raiders management and coaches watched over him 24/7.

 Tebow took the same Denver team with the same defense that could not win for Orton and went deep in the play offs.  Orton could not take the team that he was traded to into the play offs.  The QB that replaced Tebow, the legendary Peyton Manning did not do any better than Tebow with the Broncos and he is now one year older and the Broncos are in a worse place with an aging QB.  In one of his last games at Denver Tebow broke all of Denver's passing and throwing records, records held by none other than Elway.  I am not a Tebow fan but as a football fan, lets stick to the facts, and those are that simple, Tebow did more in the one season, nay in the half of one season that he was given a chance than 90% of all QB did last season.

 Peyton Manning is a dome quarterback who has a losing playoff record and does not play well in cold weather. Their best bet is to make the playoffs but lose enough to gain "road fleld advantage" is a domed stadium or someplace like Houston or Miami

 @darrelljones  @badflounder Problem is that Tebow the celebrity was a big part of that disarray.   There are too many people backing him for non-football reasons and that is detrimental to a team.  Despite the cat calls for Tebow, the Jets players were not behind the move to replace Sanchez with him.

darrelljones

 @badflounder

Tebow brings something that few other quarterbacks bring. That is, the ability to inspire teammates to higher levels. You are correct that the defense and special teams in Denver started playing better. But, it is no coincidence that they started playing better at the exact moment that Tebow became the starter. That type of locker room presence will not be overlooked every team. Someone is going to take a reach and sign him. Look at how much disarray the Jets brought to the field every day. They could have used someone who knew how to get the most of his team. Their mistake.

 @jimryan  @Jim21  @TerryFletcher-Borden Uh no, that is not at all what happened.  Denver won despite Tebow, not because of him.  I'm a Bronco fan and I watched every play.  The defense and special teams deserved far more of the credit than they got.  Tebow is an absolutely awful QB, period.  You have no clue talking about Tebow breaking Elway's records.  If you think those two even belong in the same sentence talent-wise then I question your knowledge of football.  I know it kills all you religious honks that TT isn't getting a job, but, it's simply because he can't consistently throw at the NFL level.  It's just never going to happen friend, time to move on...as TT should as well.  He can do great things in the CFL, that should be his next move.

pandah462

 @TerryFletcher-Borden  Lizzy, Tebow can't throw the ball.  Coaching might help, but I wouldn't waste the money.  Ship him to Canada to spread the good word and maybe learn to throw the ball like a QB.  My biggest fear in the NFL is that he goes into announcing.  That would be an end of days scenario.

TerryFletcher-Borden
TerryFletcher-Borden

@jimryan @Jim21 I agree 100% but we seem to be the minority on his football skills. From what I see, he can win. It's ugly, but he wins. I will be very sad if he doesn't get a chance to start as a QB somewhere this season. Going somewhere to be another back up is just a waste of time because that where the media crap starts because everyone want him in not the starter. I am praying he gets a job- yep praying. sorry no pun intended

TerryFletcher-Borden
TerryFletcher-Borden

 @Jim21I agree Jim to a point, but I just watched an NFL film of Kurt Warner last night and his throws only got better after a coach hammered him on it. I agree that Tebow needs some throwing work, but I think the other parts of the game he brings to the table should get him a team willing to build on that. At least I hope so. He inspires our kids. I have a daughter who is a college athlete and he made a difference for her and her work ethic

Jim21

 @TerryFletcher-Borden

 Well there you go, Terry. I think you just found Tebows new line of work - motivational speaking :-) Seriously, the guy has charisma and conviction and I'm glad he does help people, like your daughter. Thing is, it's unfair to ask the owner of a team to give Tebow 2 plus million to be a good guy on the sidelines. I might want to be an airline pilot but if I can't fly a plane, guess what? I'm not going to be a pilot.

jamsub

So they say the want to trade him but every team knows that the Jets will release him anyways. Unless I am missing something it makes sense to just wait for them to release Tebow.

Jim21
Jim21 like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @jamsub The only reason a team would trade instead of wait for his release is because then the team trading for him would have exclusive rights to him. They wouldn't have to outbid someone to get him. And.... Being that no one is banging down the door to land him, releasing him is the best choice.

badflounder
badflounder

 @Jim21  @jamsub True however you would still have exclusive rights to him after he is released as your team would be the only one interested. ;)
