Lions, Eagles won’t use franchise tag

NFL

It’s day one of the NFL franchise tag window, and already two teams have made it clear they won’t use the tag.

The Detroit Lions GM Martin Mayhew has already stated twice in the offseason that the Lions won’t use the tag. The Lions used the non-exclusive version of the franchise tag last year on Cliff Avril, keeping him off the free agent market. If the Lions were to tag him again, the team would have to pay him $12.7 million, 120% of his 2011 pay.

The Philadelphia Eagles won’t be using their tag either, per Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was the only candidate that merited consideration for the tag.
